Katoh Exchange Host Opportunity
Invite a Japanese child to be a member of your family for a week.
For the past twenty years, students from Katoh School in Japan have been
visiting the Beaverton area for one week at the end of October (during the
week of Halloween). Our school is an English immersion school and we pair
one of our students with a Beaverton student & host family. During the week
the students attend school together and learn about each other’s culture and
customs. The students are accompanied by teachers from Katoh School, who
are available to support both parents and students during the visit.
This is a unique opportunity for your child to connect with a student of the
same age from Japan. We hope you will consider opening your home to one
of our students!
Please contact Donna Romadka, in the office, if you are interested.
Below is a picture of our Katoh students and their host students from this year.
Please make sure that your child's first and last name are on the envelope when your child deposits money into their lunch account.
Please know that on Late Start Days due to inclement weather, the cafeteria is unable to serve breakfast as they need to prepare for the first lunch of the day.
Scholls Heights Students Compost!
Our Nutritional Services team has been composting food scraps from meal prep for the past year. Two weeks ago Nutritional Services expanded their program to students to compost food waste from hot lunches. Students are doing a great job sorting their garbage and food. They have been surprised to see the food collection, it is raising awareness and giving students a chance to be active in our sustainability goals. Since the collection began we are averaging 40 pounds of food waste being diverted from the landfill each day. Food collected at Beaverton Schools goes to a facility that turns food into energy. The food waste is broken down in to biogas, creating electricity. The byproduct of the biogas production is compost, which is used by regional farmers!
Thank you to Roberta Johnson, Cindy Wood, Doug Augustus, our Para Educators, Andrea Bonard, and the Green Team for helping our school reduce our environmental footprint and for supporting our goals as an Oregon Green School!
Monthly Walk to School Groups
For students in the walk zone, join neighbors on Wednesday, March 6th to walk to school together. Students can meet parent chaperones at 8:05 a.m. in the Sterling Park neighborhood at one of two locations: the corner of Blackbird + Whitebird or the corner of Turnstone + Pelican Way. Join us at the start or as we walk along! If you have questions or want to start a walking group from the Churchill Forest neighborhood, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
GET ON BOARD…THE PTO BOARD
The PTO is looking for leaders for next year’s PTO Board. Board members guide the organization’s activities, make decisions about PTO budgeting, and help plan/organize enriching events. There will be openings in several positions including Co-President, Co-Vice President, Co-Treasurer, Co-Secretary, and Co-Volunteer Coordinator. If you’re interested in taking an active role in school-related programming, come to our next PTO Meeting on March 4th to see what it’s all about, or e-mail email@example.com. Nominations for Board positions will be accepted at the April PTO Meeting and elections will be held in May.
Not interested in a Board position but still want to get involved? Volunteer to serve as an Activity Coordinator for one of the PTO’s many endeavors including Box Tops Collector, Hospitality Coordinator, OBOB Organizer, Book Fair Chair, Student Directory Publisher, 5th Grade Send-Off Chair, and much more! Nervous about taking a coordinator position on your own? Grab a friend to help! For details, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
New PTO Fundraiser with BottleDrop
You can now turn your empty bottles and cans into cash for our school through our new PTO fundraiser with BottleDrop. To participate, pick up a blue BottleDrop bag in the front office or email email@example.com to have a bag sent home with your student. Fill up the bag with your bottles and cans with an Oregon Refund Value (OR 10¢), and drop it off at your convenience at a nearby BottleDrop Center. We will also have selected dates when you can drop off your bags out front at school; first drop off date will be at the PTO Meeting on March 4th.
Please note that bags have a 20 lb. weight limit so if filling up with glass only, make sure to only fill the bag ½ full. Bags must be free of trash and liquid and please rinse alcohol containers if participating in the school drop off days.
Already have a BottleDrop Account? You can donate funds to “Scholls Heights Elementary PTO” from your account online.

Homework on Vacation
It is district policy that teachers do not prepare homework for students when they are absent for vacation. However, we do want to support students and learning. We encourage students to read daily. It is a great idea for students to journal about their trip. Our district and school have great online programs and students have access to math and reading. We encourage students to read on their online BookShelf account and practice math on their Dreambox account.
We have students that slip and get muddy or do not make it to the restroom in time. It is nice if we have options at school.
For our kindergarten and first grade friends, please consider packing a change of clothes in their backpacks should they need them.
