The Four Properties!

Property of the Month: Osmotic Pressure!

Equation: π = iMRT

Definition: the pressure that would have to be applied to a pure solvent to prevent it from passing into a given solution by osmosis, often used to express the concentration of the solution.

Important Vocabulary: semipermeable membrane- a type of biological or synthetic membrane that will allow only certain molecules or ions to pass through it.

the process of Osmosis- the net movement of solvent molecules through a membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.

Cold Hard Facts: Osmotic pressure could not happen without diffusion. Raising the hydrostatic pressure on the solution side of the membrane can stop osmosis.
