The Parsons Happenings

A Message from Proud Principal, Laura Clark

We've had an exciting week at Parsons! We kicked off our school wide reading program with students boarding the Bookmobile and getting to choose from a wide selection of books. We also had a special visit from 'Chopper', the Braves Mascot. What a great way to get our kiddos excited about reading!

The PTA fundraiser is in full swing! Our students are super excited about the key chain prizes they earn when they bring in their fundraising donations. Who doesn't love a fidget spinner ring and a Pikachu squishy?! I've heard buzz in the hallway there are a few students who have donated $500 just so they can throw pie in the face of their principal and their teacher. After all, I like pie and I love that the fundraising money will go to the purchase of new Chromebooks for our students. We are almost half way to our goal of raising $30,000!

Have a great Labor Day weekend! It not only allows us a 3 day weekend to make special memories with our families but it also is the reminder of the contributions that our work force has made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Proud Principal,

Mrs. Clark

Parsons' Korean Special

We are excited to add the Korean special to our list of Specials' classes offered at Parsons. Students in grades K-5 will add Korean to the list of classes they will rotate in their special area learning (Science, Art, Music, PE, Technology, & Korean). The Korean special is taught by Mrs. Joung, a certified elementary teacher, who is fluent in Korean. Students will be exposed to the Korean language and they will have the opportunity to learn more about the Korean culture.

We are proud and thankful that our school district has offered this program to our school and that ALL students get to participate because we know our county and local community are becoming a destination for many international companies, and these companies need a globally competitive workforce that possesses language skills and cultural understanding. Our school is supporting this initiative by offering the Korean special to our students.

Afternoon Transportation

All transportation changes must be made in writing.Whenever you need to make a change to your child's afternoon transportation plan, please complete an Afternoon Transportation Change Form, which can be found here or on our school's website, and send it in to your child's teacher. We will utilize this form to create the appropriate afternoon transportation pass. Please remember the GCPS Bus Rule: No passes will be issued for play dates, birthdays, weekend sleepovers, etc. For security reasons we DO NOT accept transportation changes through phone calls or emails.

Student Checkout

Anyone checking out a child must present photo identification and be listed in our system as someone able to have access to the student. If you need to make changes to your list of approved emergency contacts, you may make changes on the Parent Portal or stop by the office to update this information. As a reminder, students may NOT be checked out after 3:00 PM.

For assistance in updating contact information on the parent portal, please visit

After School Clubs

We have several opportunities for your students to participate in after school clubs sponsored by outside agencies. You will be receiving different registration forms for the clubs that will be available for you to register your child for in your Friday folders each week. If you are interested, you must register online or on their form with the companies that are offering the classes. The school does not take registration forms or money.

Here are the clubs that will be offered this semester-- Chess Club, Tennis Club, Drama Kids (this class is full at this time with a wait list), Tiger Jo's Taekwon Do, Young Rembrandts, i9 Sports, Spanish Club and Korean Language.

As you pick up your students, please remember that Car Pool policies are the same after school as it is during school hours. Parents are to stay in your car and your student will be brought to your car. This is a safety procedure that continues any time you are in the car rider lanes.

Parsons Reading Program

The Parsons Reading Program will begin in September and continue until the end of March. Students need to read a minimum of 100 minutes per week. “Reading for 20 minutes per day exposes you to 1.8 million words a year.” We are fortunate to be able to use the same Beanstack program that is offered through the Gwinnett County Public Library to track our minutes at Parsons. This is the same format that is used for the summer reading program. You will only be logging minutes (100 minutes per week), and they must be submitted online through Beanstack during the program. If your student attended Parsons last year, they should already have an account. Please check before you create another account for your student. You will need to edit the patron and check the current grade level and add the homeroom teacher's name in the name field along with your student's name. Those students who read 2500 minutes this year will receive a certificate of accomplishment and will be invited to the Reading Celebration at the end of the school year. Please see the directions attached to this eNews. Happy Reading!

CogAT testing will take place from Monday, September 9 to Wednesday, September 11 for students in Grades 1, 2, and 5. It is so important for your student to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast during testing time. Be sure to have your student here on time - when they are late checking in, sometimes they have to do make up testing on a different day.

Due to school wide schedule changes on CogAT testing dates, we ask that you do not attend lunch with your child. Thank you so much for your assistance with this.
