Kudos to our own Erik Moore who has been featured in several venues for his unique boat tours of the North Landing River and Back Bay area. You can see one of the stories about this venture here.
Congratulations to Malcolm Keyes for his recognition as a National Merit Commended Student.
Congratulations to Tahj Caines who was selected as the recipient of the September Principles of American Citizenship Award. September’s principle was responsibility.
Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program
The third annual Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Event is scheduled for March 1, 2019 and applications are due November 16, 2018. It is quite an honor to be selected as a Youth Ambassador for the Sister Cities Association of Virginia Beach. Not only do recipients receive a scholarship, they also are recognized at many citywide and regional events. Students with a 3.0 GPA in grades 9-11 may apply. The application provides details including qualifications and criteria. Please encourage qualified LHS students to apply.
Reflections Contest
The PTSA Reflections program encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Since it was founded in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, millions of students have benefited from this program.
Reflections Awards Program Students in Pre-K through grade 12 create theme-based artwork in dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts. There is also a special artist category for students with an IEP. This year's theme is, "Heroes Around Me." Please encourage your students to consider entering this contest. They can access the entry form here.
Commonwealth Armistice Art Contest
Students in grades K-12 are eligible to enter the 2018 Commonwealth Armistice Art Contest from now until mid-October. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, the Virginia WWI & WWII Commemoration Commission is hosting this statewide art contest for all public, private and homeschooled students in elementary, middle and high schools. Details and submission guidelines can be found here.
Armistice Day is the date the Allied forces signed a treaty with Germany to end the first World War. The Virginia WWI & WWII Commission want students to answer this question: How has World War I shaped Virginia and our world 100 years later? The winning artwork will be displayed at the Carillon WWI memorial at the state’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony on November 11 in Richmond.

Virtual Learning Day--October 8
October 8 will be the first of three virtual learning days in the division. Announced this year, Virtual Learning Days are not only a way for the school division to build in time to the school calendar, but they also grow students' capacity for independent learning while utilizing online resources. In fact, since 2013, students in Virginia have been required to successfully complete at least one virtual course to help prepare students for college and career opportunities after high school.
Students will be provided assignments that are designed to replicate learning experiences that would happen if the students were in school. The work may be completed on the Virtual Learning Day or over a designated 10-day window of time in order to give flexibility for students and families. Families should note that these assignments are also designed in such a way that they can be completed either online or using paper and pencil at home, depending on the student's preference and/or need. Additionally, teachers will be given an hour of time during the day specifically designated to answer any emails or questions from students about their assignments. For more information about Virtual Learning Days, visit this press release.
CWRA+ Testing
On Wednesday, October 10th, Landstown High School students enrolled in all English 12 (or English 11 4x4) courses will participate in the College and Work Readiness Assessment (CWRA+). Students’ performance on this mandatory test will provide our school and the school division with foundational data that will lead to improvements in instruction and learning in the areas of analytic reasoning, problem solving, and written communication. Please make all necessary arrangements to ensure that your child attends school and is on time for the CWRA+. Additional information about the CWRA+ can be found at vbschools.com.
Wednesday, October 10th is also the day on which students in grades 9 – 11 will participate in the PSAT test administration.
Difference Makers
Each week, a staff member is selected to receive the "I Make a Difference" award at our school. The first recipient is selected by our Teacher of the Year. Subsequent recipients are selected by the previous awardee.
