Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 23rd-27th
What's Going On This Week
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies Class: This week in Social Studies students will start their new unit on Westward Expansion. We will be exploring why people moved west, including topics such as the Homestead Act, Transcontinental Railroad, and the impact on Native Americans. Students will be given their vocabulary words for the unit on Monday or Tuesday and create flash cards on these words to help them study. They will also have access to a SpellingCity.com account where they can practice their vocabulary words. There will be a quiz over these words in the following weeks.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA Class: This week we will continue to practice comparing and ordering decimals. We will also round decimals using our knowledge of place value and a number line. Students comparing decimals project will be due Tuesday. (There were given this project on Friday and given class time both Friday and Monday to complete it.) A quiz on rounding will be given on Friday 27th. In ELA, we will examine the differences between prose, poems, and drama. Students will be creating their own prose and drama from a chosen poem. These dramas will be recorded on the ipads and presented to their peers the following week. Students have also started word of the day each day. They are doing a great job with this and will have a quiz over the first 20 words in a few weeks.
