First Grade
This grading period we will begin by working on addition and subtraction strategies and how they are related. We will be using a part – part – whole diagram to help us understand these concepts. Practicing addition and subtraction facts at home will increase fluency and build math confidence.
Our first field trip is December 12 to the Pioneer Arts Settlement in Barberville to learn about holiday traditions around the world. A permission form will be sent home with your child on Monday, November 27. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are available to chaperone. You may be asked to drive or carpool as space will be limited on the buses. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
The attendance challenge is on! Your child should arrive to school on time every day! Ms. Hedman and Mrs. Brule’s classes have already won. Which class will be next?
Third Grade
Third grade is so excited to be going on our "Walking Field Trip" to Lyonia Preserve on November 20 or November 21st. We will be doing some exciting activities while there! Disecting owl pellets, meeting some interesting animals and hoping to see a scrub jay in the preserve! Field trip money is due Thursday, November 9th so reserve your spot!
Third grade parents we are encouraging you to take your child to the Deltona Library and have your child get their first library card! This is a great opportunity for them to be choosing their own books to read! They also have many fun after school activities going on! Visit the library!
Fourth Grade
The first Math Bee was a huge success. The winner was Joseph Delgado from Miss Iamesi's class. The runner up was Carter Catalano from Mrs. Herrera's class. Please have your child continue to practice multiplication. They will use it all year.
In Reading we have began studying about Florida's Native American tribes. Ask your child to tell you how the natural surroundings influenced the lifestyle of each tribe.
Social Studies Fair information will be coming soon, be on the lookout.
Fifth Grade
5th grade is excited to have our VLT, VST, VMT, and our opinion writing prompt (High Speed Trains) behind us!! Boy, that was a lot of testing, but we are learning new things every day!
This month we are diving into multiplying and dividing fractions, and we are connecting relationships between fractions and decimals.
In writing, we are writing a killer informative piece while learning about alternative forms of energy.
In Social Studies, we are studying 8 different early explorers to North America, comparing and contrasting them, and analyzing their motives and the impacts their exploration had on the world at that time.
In Science, we made weather tools and are recording data using the tools we made. It was fun to explore and examine the weather.
We are now moving into the nature of matter. Did you know that matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed??? Pretty heavy stuff!
By the time Thanksgiving break comes around, we are going to be ready for a little rest and relaxation. Not to mention, loads and loads of turkey and mashed potatoes!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

From the Clinic
We are in bug season now. Moreover not just flu bugs, or stomach bugs but head lice bugs. As with any contagious condition prevention is key. Keep your child’s hair pulled back if it’s long; discourage head to head contact and sharing of brushes, combs, or head gear.
Please check your child for head lice during routine grooming. There is no outbreak of lice at this time but I encourage you to be proactive. The signs of head lice are scratching at the back of the neck and behind the ears. It appears like a dandruff flake but glued near the base of the hair shaft. There are many over the counter treatments. Check with your child’s doctor for what they recommend or you may pick up the flyer from your school, “Guide for Head Lice Treatment.”
If your child has head lice, please notify the school nurse. If your child is found to have live bugs during school hours, you will be asked to come pick your child up for early dismissal. Please have updated phone numbers on the emergency card at school. Should you have any questions, please contact the clinic, or go to the School Health page on the school website for more information.
