Around the School Spotlight
Our carnival was a MAJOR success! Kids and staff are still talking about how fun it was - from the games, to the bounce house to the dunk tank, it’s evident this was a really special event. I want to extend a huge thank you to Katie Kearn, who planned and organized just about every detail of the carnival. While our PAC and volunteers were also a big part of making this happen, it would not have been possible without Katie’s tireless work and energy. PAC raised over $21,000 from the carnival that will directly benefit Hawks View!
Money raised by PAC goes to many wonderful things happening here at Hawks View, including Thursday’s assembly by The Morris Brothers, which consisted of the following:
Original music, SEL strategies and audience role playing geared to age of attending audience
We share with your school the importance of self-confidence, having great character, being a superhero bystander showing kindness, empathy and acceptance of others
Explore different types of bullying, cyberbullying, peer pressure & leadership skills
All curriculum is developed by Licensed Professional Counselors and teachers
Field Day - June 9th
Students will enjoy fun activities with their class, including inflatable obstacle courses! Part of the day will be a picnic lunch. Flyers came home today via backpack mail. Be sure to make your picnic lunch choice and turn it in to the classroom teacher by May 26th. To save confusion, please fill out the form even if you are packing a lunch from home.
We couldn’t do this without our amazing volunteers! Contact Katie Kearn for more details and/or click on the sign up link below! Volunteers are encouraged to join us for lunch! All volunteers must have an approved background check, and shown proof of Covid vaccination to the office staff. If you would like an exception form for the Covid vaccination, please contact the office. Background checks and exception forms can take 7-10 to clear. Deadline to apply for a background check for the 22-23 school year is June 5, 2023.
Animals on Campus
With the weather being nicer, we know that many of our families walk their dog to school to pick up their student(s). While we appreciate that our furry friends can get out for a walk, please ensure your pup is leashed and with you at all times. Our city does have a “leash law” that requires animals to be on a leash at all times when in public. In a practical sense, this is best practice whenever you mix hundreds of children with an animal. In a worst case scenario, owners who bring their pets to school should be aware that they run the risk of assuming any liability if an incident occurs between their pet and another person.
Our district does have a "no pets on campus" policy during the school day (7:30am-3:30pm). Given this, we would appreciate adults (with pets) waiting on the perimeter of our campus for their student(s) to help avoid any kind of worst case scenario. Thank you for your help with this!
Hawks View Site Council
The Hawks View Site Council has open positions for the 23-24 school year and we hope you will consider joining the team! Site Council meetings are held four times a year from 2:30 - 3:30. The purpose of the team is to provide feedback around school improvement goals and learn more about operations and systems within our school. Additionally, it's an opportunity to hear about recent and upcoming events happening in our building. The positions are open to any interested parent/guardians who will work alongside staff and the principal. If you are interested, please complete this form by May 26th. Thank you!
2023-2024 Parent Input Form for Student Placement - Final Opportunity
The Hawks View staff realizes that parents provide valuable information regarding their child’s placement. While we do not take requests for specific teachers, parent input will be carefully considered in the formation of classes for the 2023-2024 school year. Our class placement process is a collaborative one and our Placement Team takes into account a number of factors when forming classes: personalities, academic levels, learning styles, learning needs, and student compatibility. We look at each student as an individual and as a member of a diverse class. This information will be given careful consideration. Every effort will be made to provide the most appropriate educational setting for your child and to establish well-balanced classrooms.
This is not a teacher request form. We currently do not know teacher assignments for next year, so please do not base your feedback on a specific teacher.
Please complete this survey by 5 pm on Sunday, May 14th, 2023.
Changes to COVID Requirements in K-12 Settings
This week the Oregon Department of Education and OHA announced major updates to the current COVID-19 policies for K-12. First, effective now, a five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 will no longer be required in K-12 settings. Students with positive COVID cases will now fall under similar “when to stay home” guidance as other illnesses, which is that your ill child can return to school when they have been fever-free for 24 hours and shown overall symptom improvement. Families with sick children are encouraged to contact the school office with any questions about illness and absences.
The other major change is that effective June 17, the vaccine requirement for school staff and volunteers will be lifted. We will be opening volunteer registration for the 2023-24 school year starting July 1 -- watch for an upcoming email from our district with more information on the volunteer background check and clearance process for next year.
Please note that all volunteers in schools between now and the end of the current school year are still under the vaccine requirement through June 16. Volunteer background checks for the current 2022-23 school year will close on June 5, 2023, so any parents/guardians planning to volunteer for end-of-the-year school events must complete the volunteer form by that date. For volunteer forms, please visit our website at https://sherwood.k12.or.us/resources/volunteer-opportunities/
