School Success Group Parent Update
"7 Habits of Happy and Effective Kids"
What have we been learning in the School Success Group with Mrs. Poovey?
The school success group has been working on the habits of effective people. Each week students are rating themselves, 1-5, on how they are doing in class (5 is the best). The first FIVE habits are:
Habit #1- Be Proactive: This habit means you are in charge of yourself and responsible for your own choices.
Habit #2- Begin with the End in Mind: This habit emphasizes goal setting and working towards what you want to achieve.
Habit #3- Put First Things First: This habit focuses on using time wisely and doing the "must- do" activities before the "want- to" activities.
Habit #4- Think Win-Win: This habit stresses the importance of getting along with others around you and compromising.
Habit #5- Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood: This habit encourages students to be good communicators through their listening and speaking.
How can you support our group at home?
- Remind your child of the first FIVE Habits when they are applicable to a situation: Be Proactive; Begin With the End in Mind; Put First Things First; Think Win-Win; Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood.
- Positively reinforce your child when they are using one of the highly effective habits.
- Being Proactive with behavior and classwork/homework is the habit that we have spent the MOST time on. We are giving examples each week of how students are showing responsibility for themselves, even when no one is looking. Report card time is a great chance to discuss Begin with the End in Mind and Put First Things First. Ask your child if their goals and time priorities are reflected in their grades for second quarter.
