What a Field Trip!

I am so very proud of our class for how they represented our class and Birchview on our recent field trip to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum! Not only did they listen well, but hey were curious learners and asked good questions. Hopefully your child has found a good place in your home for his or her garlic plant to grow!

Language Arts

This week we created a time line of the life of Ruby Bridges, as well as an assessment of her character in the form of the "Proof is in the Character" practice sheet. Everyone agreed she not only showed commitment, but bravery as well. We'll finish our study of Ruby Bridges next week and explore other biographies.

Look for your child's collection to come home today. While a number of students have completed their writing, others are wrapping up. If your child does not have his or her collection writing tonight, look for it to come home next week. Our opinion writing continues next week---starting with a review of our field trip!

Next week you will receive your child’s Unit 5 assessment and Unit 6 family letter. One of the new tools we will be using is “fact triangles.” These will help your child understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. We will also be discussing different ways to name a number. For example, 12 can be named with facts (10+2 or 15-8), making twelve tallies, by writing the word “twelve,” making 2 dimes and 2 pennies, etc. We want students to think about numbers flexibly!

Our field trip to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum supported and extended our classroom learning about plants. We completed our final observations of our brassica, grass & alfalfa and wheat plants. Next week we will begin our unit on dental health, including a visit from Dr. Lee Prohofsky from Turtle Cove Dentistry.
