"In the Know... Teaching and Learning at McCarthy School!
Students and teachers are working hard in mathematics to build number sense as well as their perseverance in solving problems. In K-2, students are building their number sense and skills with addition and subtraction, while in 3rd-5th, students are learning about geometry!
In Kindergarten... Students are learning how to sort and classify objects into categories. Sorting by size, shape, color, and use is an essential foundational skill for learning. Students are also are learning to count objects up to 5, answer "How many?" questions and write numbers.
In 1st Grade... Students are building their knowledge and proficiency of addition and subtraction of numbers within 10. One great strategy for learning addition is the "count on" strategy; when students are adding two numbers, they should students remember the larger number and count up from that number using fingers, number lines, or counters.
In 2nd Grade... Students also are building their knowledge and proficiency of addition and subtraction of numbers, but this time up to 100 using place value concepts, number lines, and fluency strategies. Students are applying this knowledge to solve word problems. Try one with your students: "Andy had $28. He spent $5 on a book. Lisa had $20 and got $3 more. Lisa says she has more money. Is she right or wrong? Use pictures, numbers, or words to prove your answer."
In 3rd Grade... Students are learning about two-dimensional shapes, including classifying shapes as polygons and subcategories of polygons such as quadrilaterals (4 sided shapes). Did you know that to be a polygon, a figure has to be closed (no openings), have at least three straight lines (sides), and no curves? That means a circle is NOT a polygon.
In 4th Grade... Students are learning about lines and angles, including how shapes are made of a specific number of each. They are learning how to identify intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines as well as lines of symmetry too. Geometry has a lot of vocabulary and students are working hard to remember the meaning of each term.
In 5th Grade... Students are learning about coordinate plans. Students learn about the x-axis and y-axis, how to read and plot points and how to use line graphs for real world problems. A great game to practice this skill is the board game "Battleship." A good trick to remember is move right, then up... just like when using an elevator. You need to move into the elevator before you go up.

Open House/Family Night/Curriculum Night October 4, 2023 6:30-8:00pm
Our annual Curriculum Night/Open House/Family Night is going to be on October 4, 2023, from 6:30-8:00pm. This year, our McCarthy will be a student centered/led event for students with their families. Students will visit their classrooms with their family members to show them their classroom, explain some of their work from the first weeks of school, and guide them around the classroom to share what their day at McCarthy School looks and feels like. Additionally, the students will take their families on a tour of the school, visiting the library, art room, cafeteria, music room, gym, and yes…..lost and found! More information will be coming in the next few weeks!
PLEASE JOIN THE McCarthy SCHOOL COUNCIL
A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers and community members, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C. The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
Reviewing the annual school building budget
Formulating a school improvement plan
We will also discuss our initiative with the Equity Imperative: Do students and their families have a strong sense of belonging at McCarthy School?
Please join this year’s school council by emailing Cynthia Page at:
