Library Updates

These last couple of weeks, we've been busy working with teachers and students on a variety of projects. We've worked with...

  • Mr. Wilson's 7th grade English Honors students on a project using Google My Maps to map Cole's journey in Ben Mikaelsen's Touching Spirit Bear. Click here to find out more about the assignment.
  • Mr. Wilson's 7th grade English AA students on a discussion stations activity related to their shared reading of Julie Anne Peters's book, Define Normal.
  • Andrew Scudder's 7th grade Science students on their debate project. They will be debating whether humans should focus on exploring outer space or exploring Earth's oceans. Click here to see our resource page.
  • Ms. Hashem's ESOL students on a research project learning about countries and cities around the world by creating detailed maps within Google My Maps and analyzing cultural artwork using Google Arts & Culture.

We've also been working feverishly on a website, video, and bookmark to promote summer reading. Please scroll down for more information related to that!

Assorted Announcements...

Library books are due!

Students need to return all library materials ASAP--in order to clear their accounts before summer break. This is especially important for eighth grade students.

Silent Sustained Reading

Congratulations to Mr. Baer's 8th grade Lancer Time students for winning the fourth quarter SSR pizza party! We've been thrilled by the level of participation in this program this school year. It's wonderful to see so many LMS students reading!

Summer Reading

Our 2017 Summer Reading @Longfellow site is up and running! This site provides LMS students with information related to summer reading requirements, contests, and recommended reading lists. To explain our summer reading program, Ms. Hedge and I also created two summer reading videos-- one for next year's 7th & 8th graders and one for our graduating 8th graders. Be sure to click on the button below to find out all about our summer reading program here at Longfellow!

Virginia Reader's Choice Books

The picture below shows next year's VRC lineup for middle school students. The LMS Battle of the Books club will be reading these books next year. Students interested in joining the club are encouraged to get a head start by reading some of these books over the summer. To access the high school VRC list, click here.

Public Library Cards

In an effort to promote summer reading, we'd like to encourage all LMS students to acquire library cards (if they don't have them already!) for Fairfax County Public Library.

Even if students aren't able to make it to the public library over the summer, as long as they have a library card, students will be able to borrow an endless supply eBooks through FCPL's Overdrive account. Overdrive is a book lover's dream! There are tons of wonderful Young Adult books and no late fees! When your loan period is up for a book, the book simply disappears from your account. Ebooks may be downloaded onto Kindles, Nooks, iPads, or smart phones. Students who don't possess one of these devices can read eBooks on their computers. Overdrive also offers innumerable audiobooks that can be played on any device that plays mp3's. It's such an awesome resource!

To obtain a temporary library card (good for three weeks), students and parents can apply online. In order to acquire a more permanent card, you will have to pay a quick visit to your local library.
