Introducing Forest Hills Reopening Information Page
I am introducing a new information hub for our upcoming reopening. Below, you will see a button called Forest Hills Reopening Information. This will direct you to information that will help you and your child successfully navigate the transition back to in-person instruction. As new information comes out I will include on these school website pages for your easy reference. I will also continue to include in the weekly Falcon News so you are notified directly. As of today, you will see some familiar information, as well as two new items:
- VIDEO: Forest Hills Reopening - A First Look hosted by Ms. Drimmel, our School Counselor
- Maps for our new arrival and dismissal protocols
As always, you will also find it helpful information on the district's Roadmap to Reopening page.
Forest Hills Reopening - A First Look
Visual Guide for New Arrival Plan
You will also notice the newly designated car drop off areas, which are also separated by the classroom's assigned color. Families arriving by car are asked to drop off their child in their designated area. If dropping off multiple children, drop off will be at the designated zone of the youngest rider. See the map for full map for full details, including notes about traffic flow.
Visual Guide for New Dismissal Plan
Similarly, the new dismissal plan is designed to minimize congestion and support physical distancing. You will notice the newly designated car pickup zones, as well as zones for pedestrian chaperones to wait for their child. Older siblings may also be chaperones for younger students. Siblings going home together will use the designated area of the youngest student. See the Dismissal Map for full details.
In the coming weeks, you will be asked to complete a transportation survey to indicate your child's go home plan. We ask that families keep their go home plan as stable as possible from week to week. More to come.
Every Month is Black History Month @ LOSD
This month is Black History Month. LOSD has been working hard to, not only recognize and celebrate Black lives during the month of February, but to do it all year long. Our goal is to include Black, Indigenous and People of Color voices, perspectives and history into our everyday.
This week we are sharing resources from FACT Oregon, a non-profit organization that empowers families experiencing disability in their pursuit of a whole life by expanding awareness, growing community, and equipping families. In its February newsletter, FACT Oregon celebrates Black History Month with a focus on education equity for students of color. We are sharing two resources that may be of interest to our learning community:
The Intersection of Race and Disability. Click here for a link to a series of conversations with parents about raising Black children with disabilities.
Amanda Gorman, the 22 year old National Youth Poet Laureate, opens up about her speech and auditory processing disorders in this article by Understood. “My challenges were always, just for me, something that was reality,” she says. “But I knew I had strengths, too, especially with words and writing.”
Grab & Go Meal Pickup
On Thursday, February 11, Grab & Go meals will include 7 days of breakfasts and lunches. There will be no meal pickup on Monday, February 15. Regular Grab & Go meal distribution will resume on Thursday, February 18.
Forest Hills Polar Plunge Team Fundraiser
Mark your calendar and foil your dinner plans and stop by the Chipotle at 8 Centerpointe Dr in Lake Oswego for our fundraiser on Wednesday, February 10th from 5-9pm. Culture Travel Week India, March 15-19
In preparation for Culture Travel Week, the CTW 2021 Committee is looking for any photos to share that highlight Indian events - maybe at weddings or at a festival or Indian inspired sporting event - cricket game or yoga. We would love to include them in our virtual online experience. Please send photos to kacybradshaw@icloud.com with some basic details about the your FH child (name, grade, teacher) and the event.

Making Teacher and Class Placement Changes
In order to prepare for the start of in-person learning later this month, per ODE requirements LOSD recently asked our elementary families if they would like to make a change to their learning model (hybrid to online or vice versa). While not all families requested a change, accommodating all learning model requests necessitates that some teachers will be reassigned. Principals will be communicating with families whose child has a new teacher on Friday, February 12, and teachers will be introducing themselves to any new students on or before Wednesday, February 17.
While 194 families requested a change, our priority has been to limit the impact on other students to the greatest extent possible. As a result of the shifts and reassignments to LO Online, some students who did not request a change may also have a new teacher.
In early March, we will be asking our middle and high school families if they would like to make a change to their learning model for students’ fourth quarter. Please note these changes may result in class changes in their schedule. We are letting our secondary-level families know now so that you may start contemplating your choice.
We know the possibility of changes may be difficult to hear but we are confident students will be in good hands with LOSD teachers. Our learning community is dedicated to providing a warm and welcoming environment for all of our students.
New Elementary Standards Based Report Cards
Reminder, this year, the Lake Oswego School District shifts to a standards-based report card for students in elementary schools. This new report card measures a child’s progress toward proficiency or mastery of the priority standards in Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking, and Math.
This approach provides the means for communicating a child’s learning in more specific terms. Standards-based reporting articulates clear end-of-year grade-level standards for each subject. Using the scale below, teachers will communicate where a child resides on a learning continuum by indicating the student’s progress toward mastery of each identified grade-level standard.
This new, standards specific format provides more detailed information about your child’s progress, which means that you may notice fewer comments than you have on previous report cards.
The standards-based reporting scale:
4 = The student is highly proficient and works consistently at an in-depth and complex level within or beyond the end of year standard*
3 = The student is proficient and meets the grade-level expectation of the standard
2 = The student is nearly proficient and nearly meets the end of year standard
1 = The student is developing and demonstrates limited proficiency on the end of year standard
Important notes about the scale:
Reporting is based on the end-of-year grade-level expectation. Therefore, proficiency would not be expected in the middle of the school year.
A “2” represents the expected target for the majority of the school year as this indicates the child is progressing with the standard as expected. A “3” will be given when the student completely meets the grade-level standard.
Details of what is expected at mastery level can be found on the report card or on the list of assessed grade-level standards.
A “1” may prompt additional communication from the classroom teacher so parents will better understand their child’s learning journey.
*It is rare that a child will receive a “4” especially at the end of the first semester. A “4” score may prompt additional communication from the classroom teacher to discuss ways he/she is meeting the child’s unique learning needs.
Another new feature to our standards based report card is ‘Learning Progress’ at the end of each content area. The Learning Progress section provides an overall progress score for those specific content standards.
+ = student is making significant progress in this content area/in these learning (?) standards
= = student is making steady progress in this content area/in these standards
- = student is making minimal progress in this content area/in these standards
Behavior Learning Targets are approached differently than end-of-year standards. These targets will be measured with the following scale:
C = Consistently
G = Generally
R = Rarely/Sometimes (Needs Improvement)
Report cards will be available next Friday, February 12th in ParentVUE. If you are unsure how to access ParentVUE, please contact the front office at 503-534-2350. As always, if you have questions or for more information about your child’s progress in any area, contact the classroom teacher. Click here for more information about Common Core State Standards.
YouthTruth Survey
As part of our district diversity, equity, and inclusion work, we are excited to offer the opportunity for you to give us feedback on your school experience through the YouthTruth survey. Giving parents, staff, and students the opportunity to reflect on their school experience is vital to understanding where we are and where we want to go.
The YouthTruth School Experience Survey is scheduled to be administered to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade elementary students between Monday, February 1 and Friday, February 19, 2020 during the school day. The survey will take 15-30 minutes to complete. Please note that parents may opt their child out of the survey if they would like - click here for more information.
Families will receive an invitation to participate in the survey on February 1. Please look for this invitation to access the 15-minute survey from the District website. The YouthTruth survey is confidential. You and your 3rd, 4th and 5th grade child(ren) responses will be held in the strictest confidence.
We encourage everyone to participate. This will be an important piece of information for administrators to use in order to address school experience issues.
