Parents/Guardians for Class of 2023 - Grade 8 MCAS Information
Dear Parents/Guardians of 8 th Graders:
Monomoy Regional High School will soon administer the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System English Language Arts test to all 8 th grade students. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) uses the MCAS to better measure the critical thinking skills students need for success in the 21st century. There will be two testing sessions in English Language Arts during April and two testing sessions in both Mathematics and Science during the month of May.
We use the results from MCAS testing to assist us in determining areas for curricular development. Please know that we do not use the results from any single assessment to measure a student’s academic potential. We believe that participation in MCAS testing during grade 8 will ultimately prepare students for the grade 10 MCAS testing used for high school competency determination and graduation requirements.
*****The English Language Arts test is scheduled to be administered on Tuesday April 2 nd
and Thursday, April 4 th . Make up sessions will be scheduled for the following week if
necessary.
Additional upcoming testing dates:
Mathematics: May 14th and 16th
Science: May 21st-23rd
Please note that attendance on the designated testing days is extremely important. In an effort to maximize results on the exam, please urge your child to eat a nutritious breakfast on the days of testing, and suggest as much sleep as possible on the nights prior to the exam. As always, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
Sincerely,
Jennifer L. Police

ATTENTION! 8th GRADE PARENTS
As part of our Comprehensive School Counseling Curriculum, I have introduced the software program Naviance to the 8th grade students. Naviance is a web-based program that assists students in career awareness, course selection, and career and college planning. Naviance is used by the students throughout their Monomoy High experience. Not only does this software help to give insight and direction to students in their academic/career pursuits but serves as a way to communicate and collaborate with students and parents.
Most recently the 8th graders took 2 assessments that lay a foundation in their self-discovery. Please have your son/daughter log into Naviance to view results.
My Learning Style Inventory
The Learning Style Inventory online assessment diagnoses students’ unique learning styles based on an analysis of their personal preferences in 16 different areas. Those areas include the student’s immediate environment, emotionality (motivation, sociological needs, and physical needs. I strongly encouraged the students to use some of the identified preferences to improve their methods of study and learning.
Strengths Explorer
Strength Explorer is a career planning and assessment tool developed by The Gallop. Gallop has spent 50 years refining their research with the conclusion that people thrive when they Focus on their Strengths. The assessment reveals the student’s top 3 innate talent themes and then offers ways to develop these talents into strengths. The students were amazed at how accurate this assessment results were.

Athletics Weekly Summary
March 23rd - March 29th
Written by: Caroline Howard
Well folks, let’s hope that week off treated you well because Spring Sports’ seasons are in FULL bloom! Wahooo! So, grab a spot on the recliner and put those feet up because these games will knock you off them!
To start us off, Thursday brought around matches for both Girls and Boys Tennis! They matched up against Martha’s Vineyard, and poured all of their love into it! Unfortunately in the end however, the Whalers took the matches with the victory. It’s alright Sharks, you’ll get them next time!
Also on Thursday was Girls Lacrosse battling Sturgis West in their season opener! Boy was this the way to start off with a bang! In a tight game, the Sharks swam into a win 8-7 over West! Way to play girls, way to play!
It can also be said that our other lacrosse team, Boys Lacrosse, grasped a victory yesterday. Andddd you’d be right! The boys also faced off against Sturgis West to kick off their season, and it looks like it’s going to be a great one folks! The final score of the game was 15-2 for the Sharks! Great effort boys, keep it up!
Well well well fans, it looks like Spring Sports are about to be in high gear so get ready for a couple of very exciting months! We can’t wait! For now, I’m Caroline Howard and Go Sharks!
