Social and Emotional Learning - who should teach it to children?
Sound familiar? You are probably thinking - she sounds like a broken record, YES, kids don't know how to interact with each other or persevere when things get tough. So true and we can't rely on home to teach this to our students. We must act ourselves!
This weekend, I watched a short video that focused on these 5 keys to SEL: 1) Self-Awareness;2) Self-Management; 3) Social Awareness; 4) Relationship Skills; and 5) Decision Making. I encourage you to watch this quick video as well, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqNn9qWoO1M
As our leadership team meets to plan for next school year and our goals, SEL will be a focus area and the 5 essentials above may guide us. Providing a solid SEL environment for our students falls under the "Supportive Environment" of the 5 Essentials.
Food for thought for the remainder of this year - when students spend their social time or purposeful play time together, give them an objective to focus on while interacting, then have a collaborative discussion afterward and share out providing examples of how they handled things. Some objective ideas include: Cooperation, emotions, impulse control, motivation, social pressure, empathy, respect, communication, reflection, teamwork, and sharing.
