SoWashCo Young Scholars
Nurturing Potential, Sustaining Support
May 2023
Happy May Everyone!
It's hard to believe we have less than a month to go in this school year. It feels like just yesterday I was sending out the very first Young Scholar Newsletter, and suddenly, somehow seven years have flown by.
There are now only a few weeks left of my time as Young Scholar Coordinator, and I want to send a HUGE thank you out to all the students, families, and SoWashCo staff that have been a part of Young Scholars over the past seven years. It has been an amazing journey, and I have been truly honored to be a part of your lives.
As I begin my new adventure at the University of Minnesota next fall, I leave knowing that your Young Scholar's immense talents and potential will take them far. After all, they have your amazing support to keep believing in themselves, see the strengths in others, and advocate for the access and affirmation they need to see their bright futures come true.
For our last edition, I've put together a few of my favorite resources from past newsletters.
I hope you'll find something that's just right for your family.
Thank you again for the privilege of supporting you and your Young Scholar. I am incredibly thankful to have known you all.
Warm regards,
Colleen

Biblio nasium Finding ‘just right’ books that get kids excited about reading can be tough. Biblionasium helps kids (and parents and teachers, too:) find, organize, review, and recommend great books! | Bedtime Math Families can receive fun daily questions to inspire kids' math thinking through the website Bedtime Math. This also comes as a free app for iPhone/iPad and Android devices and is available in both English and Spanish. Bedtime Math is a fun way to get your Young Scholar talking and thinking about math! | It's Okay to Be Smart It's Okay To Be Smart is a YouTube channel hosted by Joe Hanson, a Ph. D. biologist, science writer, and creator/host/writer of the PBS Digital Studios show It's Okay To Be Smart. Videos are generally short and are divided into topics such as food science, animals, space and more. While these videos are, as a whole, created with kids in mind, it is always important to first make sure that they meet your family's guidelines for appropriate content. |

Science Bob The website Science Bob offers kids the chance to view videos, try out science experiments, and learn about subjects such as space, earth science, and more. | Big Life Journal The Big Life Journal Blog is a parent resource on a wide variety of topics centering about building a growth mindset. You can also sign up for weekly free printables and check out their made-for-kids podcast on the full Big Life Journal site. | Young Scholar Traits and Resources The Young Scholar Traits and Resources has been developed as a guide and way to name and build language around what you may be experiencing with your Young Scholar. As you well know, children are wonderfully unique. The traits will look a little different in every child, and it is not expected that any child will show all of the traits. Each trait has also been matched with books, puzzles, websites and other resources to help your Young Scholar practice and build their skills - and have fun at the same time! |

About Me
Hello!
My name is Colleen Redmond, and I am honored to work as Coordinator for SoWashCo Young Scholars.
I'm a mom, a wife, small business owner, avid biker (the pedal kind), book enthusiast, and beekeeper.
I've been lucky enough to teach in South Washington County Schools for over twenty-five years and have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many students and families over the years.
Now, as part of Young Scholars, I have the honor of working with the amazing staff, students, and families throughout SoWashCo to implement and grow the Young Scholars program.
I am so very excited to work with and support you and your Young Scholar. I can't wait to see where the journey takes us!
