A Note from Mr. Fitz....
Fall Assessments
Today begins week number 3 of the 2019-2020 school year. It is also the time we will begin assessing our students with two different tools. The first one is called Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment ( F&P for short). This assessment is administered in a one on one situation by a teacher. The goal of the evaluation is to identify the instructional and independent reading levels of each child. This data helps us support each child at the appropriate level.
The second assessment is the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (NWEA for short). Unlike F & P, this assessment is an online adaptive test taken along with others in the class and in two subject areas - math and reading. The data also helps us support each child at the appropriate level. The uniqueness of the NWEA test is that it adjusts as a child answers. After several correct answers, the level of difficulty increases. A few incorrect answers, the level of difficulty decreases. Also, there will be information on the assessment that is not known to your child. That’s part of an adaptive test. Also, no two tests are exactly the same.
After reviewing the data from last school year and having conversations with students and staff, we have decided to limit each testing session to 30 minutes which will require us to have multiple testing sessions for each subject. We hope by doing so, each child will give their best during that time frame and not focus on how many more are left to answer.
Please encourage your child to give it their best each session.
Evacuation Drill - Tues, September 17
A few years back the GP School District began practicing all school evacuations. The goal of the drill is to quickly evacuate all students and staff and get to an alternative location. The drill usually lasts between 45 to 75 minutes. Trombly’s drill is scheduled for tomorrow, September 17. Kindergarten and our pre-k classes will be transported on a school bus. We also ask that you send your child in shoes that will be comfortable for walking. Once the drill is complete, you will receive a message from us.
Conferences are coming......
The evening of Wednesday, Oct 9 and the afternoon and evening of Thursday October 10 have been set as the Fall Parent/Teacher conferences dates. Additional information about these conferences will be in next week’s newsletter. We will once again be using SignUp Genius to schedule the conferences.
Safe Routes to School
Grosse Pointe Public Schools will be working with Lauren Carlson to submit grants to The Safe Routes to Schools program. The goal will be to create a GPPSS Walkability Program. As part of the process the group will evaluate, identify and look to improve student routes to all schools in the Grosse Pointe Public School District. Trombly along with Defer and Pierce will be part of the first round of grants. Patrice Arend, our PTO President, and Walter Fitzpatrick will be the Trombly’s representatives on the District Wide committee. The first meeting of the group will be on Wednesday, Sept 18 at 6 PM. Updated information will be shared in our next weekly newsletter.
