SCCS Home Bulletin

The mission of Sioux Center Christian School is to disciple God’s children by equipping them with a knowledge and understanding of Christ and His creation so that they can obediently serve God and others as they work and play.
Every Student TREASURED, Every Student TRAINED, Every Student TRANSFORMED
SCCS TEACHING AND LEARNING SEGMENT
Hello Parents! My name is Jill Van Soelen, and I am SCCS’s Director of Faculty Development. My role is to provide leadership and vision in the ongoing review, planning, and implementation of curriculum as well as design professional learning for our faculty. In this section of the Home Bulletin, I invite you to learn about a slice of SCCS related to teaching and learning. A slice, like a piece of my grandma’s delicious homemade pie, that will help us to get a better picture of the whole.
The curriculum slice is best viewed in the context of the classroom where our teachers are the Living Curriculum. You get a glimpse of the written curriculum in weekly newsletters, at Parent Visit Days, and in wrinkled papers at the bottom of your child’s backpack. The written curriculum and professional development at our school support our faculty in providing quality instruction and learning experiences that shape the whole child. SCCS recognizes the crucial role of the teacher, the Living Curriculum, as the key in designing engaging and effective instruction. The first slice to share with you is the importance of our Wednesday professional development time. Teachers collaborate, design, and deepen in curriculum, instruction, and assessment, so that we can make good on the promise of our school’s mission and to ensure your students are treasured, trained, and transformed. A portion of the Wednesday work is in Language Arts, and our next Home Bulletin will offer a slice of what that time involves.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to our 4th grade class who won the People's Choice award in the Prairie Woods Nature Center's 2022 Christmas Tree decorating contest! Their Christmas tree featured student-crafted ornaments that pointed to nature and reflected their class storyline, "Fully Rely on God" (F.R.O.G.). As the winner of this award, the fourth graders will enjoy an exclusive live animal program with Sunday Ford, as well as a People's Choice First Place plaque! Thank you to Sioux County Conservation Board/Oak Grove Park for all the ways their education team helps our students study and enjoy God's great design in His creatures and creation! We are blessed by their knowledge and love of nature!
