Bullying
by: Ann Katheryn Fadal
Preface
Many people think bullying is something to brush off, but in reality, its everywhere and it should be made aware to the world that it needs to stop. Many people think that bullying is only teenagers pushing other teenagers up on a locker and asking them for lunch money, but its more than that. Thousands of kids are beaten at home, cyber bullied, and socially humiliated. These kids, and sometimes adults need to be helped, but people don’t see that. They need to.
Expository
What It Is and What It Can Cause
Bullying: a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. A bully is someone who picks on someone to make them feel better about themselves. Most of the time bullies are very popular, a bullies peers are very scared not to be his/her friend. Because of this the bully is “respected” even though he/she has no respect for anyone else.
Bullying can cause so many problems. For example, a very successful pop star and role model Demi Lovato was bullied in middle and high school. In her case, she became anorexic, basically bulimic, and cut herself. Some people will beg to differ and say she over exaggerated, but obviously that is not the case. After a year in recovery, she is 20 years old and happier and more successful than ever before. Demi has used her singing ability, not only to entertain the public but to inform them that bullying is a real life matter and should be noticed. Studies show that one in six middle school and highschool kids are bullied. Whether it’s at home bullying, in school, or even cyber bullying. Some people like to think that bullying is always very extreme. That is not always the case, bullying can be as simple as a rumor going around about you or even a joke that was meant to be sarcasm but actually hurt you. In Lovato’s case, she was harassed. "People would write 'hate petitions' [about me] and send them around to be signed. They'd have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They'd come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away." said Demi in (People magazine).
Another example is the book “Thirteen Reasons Why” a book about a girl who commits suicide due to bullying and she gives 13 reasons why she did it. “Everything... affects everything” (Asher 186). This quote has a lot of meaning. Another quote explains what the first quote means. “You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life.” (Asher 238). This book explains the emotional pain of being bullied.

This image has a lot of meaning to it. The girls displayed in this image have writing written
on them, explaining what they are called at school and at home. This is a great representation of
bullying, people should take it more seriously.
Narrative
Sticks and Stones Will Break My Bones, But Words Will Always Hurt Me
Bullying is something that is overlooked. Everyone seems to think that bullying is stupid and can be fixed. For instance, cyber bullying, people think that its the victims fault. I completely agree, if you’re going to be bullied over the internet via twitter, delete your twitter.
Its happened to me, I made a few mistakes and then the next day at school everyone knew and was tearing me apart over social media. I decided to deactivate my twitter for a few days and the harassment stopped. “Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.”
(Theodore Roosevelt) Some victims will go home and check social media every 5 seconds and when something bad pops up about them they’ll just stare at it and not do anything about it. It doesn’t make sense to me, if these people would just delete their twitter or facebook or whatever they’re being harassed on, they wouldn’t be sad.
There is another type of bullying that cannot really be stopped. The physical kind, the kind that parents pray not to happen to their kids. The kind that when you’re the least bit different from everyone, you get beaten up on the way to the bus. This kind can also happen at home, this kind is worse. “When people hurt you over and over, think of them like sandpaper. They may scratch and hurt you a bit, but in the end, you end up polished and they end up useless.” (anonymous http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/bullying) This is the kind where the child is scared to go home. No child should ever feel like that in their life. When the teachers see the bruises and scars they ask what;s wrong but the parent denies all of it, and its hard to believe a child over a parent, that is one reason why its so bad, because its sometimes hard to tell who’s lying.
All the types of bullying are bad, and unacceptable but sometimes you do things to stop it, other times not. Over all bullying is a serious matter and should be analyzed more than it is.Choice Element
“Love is louder than the pressure to be perfect” Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Justice, Zendaya Coleman, and AnnaSophia Robb have written this quote on their hands in order to stop bullying and give young girls confidence in their bodies. This quote basically means that God’s love is greater than societies definition of perfect. By these celebrities writing this on their hands, is making people aware of bullying.
Poem
Bullying Hurts
You should know bullying hurts,
It starts with one word you blurt.
Fat, ugly, worthless, these are the words they hear,
Did you know you’re their biggest fear?
Day by day you torment them,
It takes so long for their hearts to mend,
All they ask for is one true friend
But you make them want their lives to end.
Every day they wake up with regret
All they want to do is forget
Its the words you say,
They hurt so much, they just want to fade away.Work Cited
"Bullying." Wikipedia.com. Ed. Wikipedia. N.p., n.d. Web.
This website was very informative. It provided a lot of information about bullying and the effects or it, such as suicide and self harm. The best thing that it provided was the different types of bullying, such as military bullying, cyberbullying, parent bullying, and legal bullying etc. Overall this certain website was put together very well, it informed me about bullying in very cool ways. The author to this article is anonymous so there are no conclusions he/she drew.
"Bullying-Psychology Today." Bullying Psychology. Ed. Sussex Directories. Sussex Publishers, n.d. Web.
This website was poor. The only thing I was informed about was the psychology about bullying, don’t get me wrong, I needed to know about it but I needed to know more than just that. My conclusions are that bullies and victims are not liked among others. The authors conclusions are that when they grow up, the bullies and victims do not do good in the real world of business and work.
"11 Facts About Bullying." Do Something. Ed. NASP. NASP Make Beats, 18 May 2012. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This website provided twelve facts about bullying. The facts included percents and ages most bullying occurs at, I learned a lot about bullying through this particular website, it was very helpful toward this project as far as facts. This website had everything I was looking for. My conclusions are that most middle school and elementary kids get bullied physically and high school its more cyber. The authors conclusions are the same.
"The Psychology Of Bullying." The Psychology Of Bullying. Ed. Theravive. Theravive, 6 Jan. 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This website answered a lot of the twenty questions I wrote down for the first portion of this assignment. It helped me out a lot because the questions I wrote down I wanted the answer to. Because of this website, most of them are answered. My conclusions and the authors conclusions are pretty much the same, they are... that bullying is a very serious issue and there a lo of different ways to handle it.
Bruce. "Causes Of Bullying." Causes Of Bullying. Wordpress, 28 Apr. 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This website was exactly what I was looking for. I needed to know the causes of bullying and this website does an amazing job of letting you know the certain causes to the certain types of bullying. The authors conclusion is that the effects of bullying are long term in all cases. I disagree, I think its only long term in some cases.
"Common Causes of Bullying." - Life123. Ed. Jenney Cheever. Jenney Cheever, 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
Through this website I learned that the most common way to raise a bully grows up is through no love from his/her parents. And the most common way to raise a victim is making him/her socially awkward, or shy. This website was the best by far because I learned a lot more about the causes. Me and the author’s conclusions are the same thing, we both think the same things cause bullying.
"Examples of School Bullying Scenarios." Examples of School Bullying Scenarios. Ed. Susan. Susan Publishers, 21 Mar. 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This article helped me understand different scenarios of different types of bullying. At my school it’s mainly cyberbullying, there’s no shoving up against lockers and punching people to get their lunch, but in some schools it is. The authors conclusion was that bullying can happen anywhere you go to school, you could be bullying someone over the internet and not even know it.
Shane Koyczan. "To This Day Project - Shane Koyczan." YouTube. YouTube, 19 Feb. 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This is a very powerful video. It explains a story of a man and a girl with something wrong with them and they had gotten made fun of throughout their lives, and “To This Day” they hate the nicknames they were called and they are emotionally messed up.
U.S Department of Health and Human Services. "Effects of Bullying." Home. Independence Avenue, 2013. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This website played a very crucial part in my project because it explained all the effects of bullying. There are so many long term and short term effects its crazy. Being bullied is a very big deal and also being a bully is very horrible. The effects of bullying and being bullied effect more than you know, such as your career choice, and that can even depend on how much your salary is. The effects to bullying are extreme.
Asher, Jay. "Thirteen Reasons Why." Goodreads. Razorbill, 18 Oct. 2007. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.
This is a book about a girl who commits suicide and gives 13 reasons why, throughout the book it explains the 13 reasons and all them are about getting bullied. Imagine what its like to be bullied so much that you take your own life because of it. No one can fathom the pain it causes. The author in this book feels for this girl that has been bullied and has probably been bullied himself.
