Summer Reading
Last week the Elementary School Library sent out an infographic that helps explain the impact that the summer slide can have on your child when it comes to reading. The infographic also highlighted some strategies parents can use to help keep their children reading over the summer, including some library resources that are still available to students.
This week, I would like to share some video links that will help parents learn to access those library resources with their students over the summer. Here are some quick tutorials that will walk you through how to access tools like Sora, Biblionasium, TrueFlix, and various library databases. Click on the links below to learn how you can help your child login to these resources from home or anywhere with an Internet connection.
The Elementary School Library would also like to remind parents to follow them on Twiter @CSDLibraries and to use #cadottreads to find summer reading recommendations, reading challenges, and to share where and how their children are reading all throughout the summer!
The school library wants to take some time to highlight the rewards students can earn for reading over the summer. The 2019 summer reading program is titled "A Universe of Stories". For their participation, students can earn locker badges that they can place on their lockers when they return in the fall to show everyone all of the reading they did over the summer. If students complete all of the reading challenges in the library's reading logs, they will then be entered into a drawing to receive some fun prizes, like Merge Cubes, a Dot Robotics Kit, a Littlebits "Rule Your Room Kit", or a Sphero Mini Robot.
If you would like your child to participate in this reading program, simply download one of the forms below. Then, track and log all of the reading you do together over the summer. In the fall, have your child return the reading log to the elementary school library so he/she can receive the badges that have been earned. If your child completes all of the reading challenges, then he/she will be entered into the drawing to win one of the larger prizes.

The Elementary School Library would also like to remind parents to follow them on Twiter @CSDLibraries and to use #cadottreads to find summer reading recommendations, reading challenges, and to share where and how their children are reading all throughout the summer!

School Presentation: Greg Mortenson
The fourth-graders had the opportunity to welcome our guest speakers with a lovely song led by Mrs. Grossinger. Author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson shared his story of promoting peace and education for children in the middle east alongside a former Central Asia Institute student; Drakshan, and writer Karin Ronnow.
Greg and the others shared their vision of a future with all children having equal access to education. They also explained to 4th graders the importance of awareness, advocacy, and the promotion of peace. Thanks to all of those who contributed to the Pennies For Peace program and who have supported the A Walk in their Shoes presentations this year.

UWEC Rugby Players Return to Cadott!
Parents, you may or may not have heard about the rugby unit we conducted last week. Hopefully our student(s) excitedly informed you about this opportunity. Due to PACE we were fortunate to add rugby to our Cadott Elementary curriculum last year. However, I wasn’t certain we’d enjoy learning from UWEC players this year, as I know collegiate athletes are busy. Mr. Holtz, a fourth grade teacher here at Cadott, provided me with connections that have allowed us to continue to have collegiate level Rugby players teach and play at our elementary. Our relationship with the UWEC rugby program continues to strengthen and we hope to have the UWEC Women’s team send members next school year. Rugby is a sport for all, and we hope to model that for our students. Along with our students, I would like to thank all of those who have helped us to learn and play such an exciting game! Specifically, I’d like to thank UWEC’s Rugger Cale Christianson who organizes his players and ensures we have rugby players here all day throughout the week.
Thank You,
Mr. Yeager

The Big Race Qualifiers
Families,
As I am sure many of you have heard we conducted our “Big Race” time trials this week. Due to hard work and resiliency a great number of our students set personal records. I’d like to thank all of our students for their effort and determination, it’s inspiring. The fastest 6 boys and 6 girls from each grade qualified for the race. If you see seven runners in a group it is because the sixth place finishers had the exact same time. Kindergarten will compete in the 400 meter race, first and second grade will compete in the 800 meter race, third & fourth grades will compete in the 1 mile race and fifth and sixth grades will compete in a 1 mile race. For those K-5 students who didn’t quite make the Big Race this year, there is always next year! For those who have made the big race, be sure to eat healthy and stay hydrated for Friday the 24th. The races start at 2:00, beginning with the Kindergarten and then progressing by grade. If the weather doesn’t cooperate we will host our Field Day and the Big Race on the following Friday, the 31st.

Head Start 3-Year-Old Classroom Within the Cadott School District Elementary
CESA 11 Head Start will be opening a 3 yr old classroom within the Cadott elementary building this fall. The classroom will be able to offer 17 income-eligible 3 year olds an age appropriate early education experience. Along with the educational aspect of the program, family services, health, and nutrition are also key elements. Head Start was developed in 1964 as a part of then President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. Experts were called on to create a comprehensive child development program to help communities support lower income families and children access to quality early education services.
While there are income guidelines for enrollment in this classroom, there are also some factors that can qualify a child/family regardless of income: being a foster child, receiving SSI, and receiving W-2 are some of those factors. Selection is based on need/priority points so please contact Kari Roshell at 715-667-3104 (Stanley-Boyd Head Start center) for more information or to fill out enrollment paperwork. CESA 11 Head Start is excited to be able to offer this classroom within the Cadott School District!

Sports
Cadott 12U Softball Team Yellow had a great game on Wednesday Night at Seymour. The girls have a lot to be proud of themselves for. They did a great job hitting the ball and had some great defensive plays. One highlight of the game was a homerun by Mariah Sloop. Great job ladies!
Cadott Team Black played Thursday night at Cadott versus Bloomer Orange. The girls continue to improve with each game and practice and are building confidence trying new positions. The girls were able to seize the win in the 5th inning scoring 5 runs to put them ahead and win the game 10 to 7. Great job girls!
Come and cheer on the girls at their upcoming games on 5/21 in Bloomer at 6pm and on 5/23 in Thorp at 5pm and 630pm.
Girls on the Run
The girls chose to support our specials teachers for their Community Impact Project this year. They raised money at a home track meet by selling bookmarks and bracelets. They raised $156 for art and band supplies! They also donated their time by helping Mr. Peters and Mrs. Grossinger set up for the choir/band concert. They also plan to donate their time to Mrs. Palmer and Mr. Yeager in the next few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has supported our program by being a coach, running buddy, by donating money to them, or just cheering them on. We really appreciate your support!
If you are interested in helping coach next year’s team, please contact Mrs. Mathison at mathisona@cadott.k12.wi.us.
