The author Jacob Riis not only wrote the book, but also took pictures and illistrated the book. He is a pioneer that came from Denmark in 1870, he is a photojournalisum the focused on the plight of poor in the Lower East side. He wrote about the Jews, Italians, and Irish. He stoppped short of calling for the government intervention.
