October 31, 2021
Each month I have been introducing different members of our staff. Please meet our room 100A Crew. THEY ROCK!
Pictured: Nicole Accorso, Dina Barnard, Stephen O’Riley, Kerri Steve, Rebbecca Uzelmeier, Julie Anderson, Patrick Manou
Mr. Manou:
This is Mr. Manou’s 4th year here at Arcadia High, and his favorite thing about this school year is having all of his students back in person! Mr. Manou is an English and Special Education Teacher who teaches English 11, English 12, CIA, and Mosaics. Mr. Manou is also one of the Class Advisor’s for the Senior Class of 2022, and helps organize and plan all the exciting events that come with being an upperclassmen! Mr. Manou cannot wait to see more of his students in action on the field, on the stage, active in the community, or participating in clubs, as we inch closer to normalcy! One hope Mr. Manou has for this school year is to continue building relationships with his Juniors and Seniors, and making their last moments here at Arcadia, memorable. Please feel free to stop in our office and never hesitate to reach out with any questions! We have a fun year ahead for our seniors!
Miss. Accorso:
This is Miss. Accorso’s 18th year in Greece, and 7th year at Arcadia HS. Miss Accorso is a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for the district. She works with both students and staff in individual and classroom settings. Her goal is for students to feel comfortable, confident and successful, while learning about themselves and self-advocacy skills. She helps with organizational, academic, and social skills. For ten of her years with Greece, she also taught American Sign Language. Her favorite thing about this school year is having all of the students back in person, 5 days a week! Miss. Accorso is excited to be back at Arcadia and looks forward to a great year!
Mrs. Steve:
This is Mrs. Steve’s 15th year in Greece and her 13th at Arcadia. Mrs. Steve is the Speech Language Pathologist in the building. She pushes into many English and Social Studies classes and this year even a Science class to work on vocabulary development, executive functioning skills, writing skills and study or test taking skills. Mrs. Steve also works with groups and individual students outside of the classroom to target pragmatic language skills, critical thinking and self-esteem. Mrs. Steve is excited to work with students and colleagues in person this year. She hopes to build relationships and help her students become independent learners as well as a connected part of the Arcadia community. Mrs. Steve loves Arcadia and is proud to be a Titan!
Mrs. Anderson:
This is Mrs. Anderson’s 13th year in Greece and her 7th year at Arcadia. Mrs. Anderson is an Inclusive Education teacher, who teaches English 9 and 10. She is so excited to be back in person this year; it is wonderful seeing kids again! Her goal for this year is to build positive relationships with all of her students and get to know their individual interests. Mrs. Anderson is looking forward to a successful school year with her students and colleagues. Let’s Go Titans!
Mrs. Uzelmeier:
This is Ms. Uzelmeier’s second year here. After teaching at the Women’s Correctional Facility in Albion for Medaille College for 19 years, and The Charles Finney School for 5 years, Mrs. U went back to Roberts Wesleyan to earn her Master’s degree in Inclusive Education and Biology. Mrs. Uzelmeier loves science and loves seeing all of her students in person this year, and working with them so that they have a successful school year. She feels very fortunate to have colleagues who are supportive of her and our students at Arcadia. She loves being a part of the Titan family!
Mrs. Sauers:
This is Mrs. Sauers’ 13th year here at Arcadia! Mrs. Sauers is a Social Studies and Special Education teacher and teaches Global 9 and Global 10. Mrs. Sauers is excited to be back working with kids and is really looking forward to making connections with her new students this year!
Mr. O’Riley:
This is Mr. O’Riley’s 1st year here. He has taught in various other districts like the City of Rochester, Webster, and Rush-Henrietta. He earned his master’s degree in History in 2015 from the State University of New York at Brockport. He teaches both 12:1:1 Global 9 and 12:1:1 Global 10. He also does consultant teaching for three other sections of social studies and English. His father was a Science teacher at Greece Arcadia HS back in the early 2000’s and so, in a way, it feels like coming home for him to be teaching here this year. Though he’s a long-term substitute, he feels very welcomed and supported among the teachers and students of this great learning community at Arcadia High!
Mrs. Barnard:
This is Mrs. Barnard’s 25th year in Greece. After teaching Business Education for many years, she is currently a “Teacher on Special Assignment” as a Work Based Learning Coordinator for the district’s Work Study and Pathways programs. Although her services are district wide, she feels fortunate to have her office at Arcadia, particularly in room 100A. Her favorite part of this school year is having all the students back five days a week. Seeing students in classrooms and participating in activities again shows we are moving forward towards normalcy after a challenging year. She is excited that several Arcadia students are participating in Work Study this year and hopes that more students will learn the benefits of this great program! Our community partners really enjoy having students while they learn critical work readiness skills. Mrs. Barnard’s three sons graduated from Arcadia and she currently has a daughter attending. Once a Titan, always a Titan!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
A message from Mrs. Wawrzyniak:
This month we have been working on our citizenship, specifically in the areas of empathy, kindness, and respect! It has been a journey; but I have to say we have seen considerable improvements the last couple of weeks. Thank you for your support and conversations at home. It takes a village and a community to make a difference!
I am proud to say that we are growing and that we will continue to challenge ourselves in these areas to be our very best! Areas that we will continue to focus on:
- Creating a Welcoming & Affirming Environment
- Building Trust
- Understanding respect looks and feels different
- Listening to others NOT just hearing others is kind
- Empathy is being human - the ability to understand and share the feelings of another
- Sometimes the negative labels we carry are put on us from things people have said, lies we’ve believed, or the way we feel about ourselves. However, the only label that we should be carrying is LOVED (watch video below)
THINK ABOUT HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
- YOU MATTER!!
- OTHERS AROUND YOU MATTER!!
- SHOW LOVE TO THOSE AROUND YOU!!
- WE ARE ARCADIA!!
- ONCE A TITAN ALWAYS A TITAN!!
Letter from: Kathleen Graupman [Superintendent of Schools]
Dear Greece Families,
Returning to school full time during the pandemic has been challenging in many ways and we are concerned about the increase in student fights and misuse of social media. As part of our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment, Greece Central secondary schools have begun to talk to all students about the consequences for unsafe and disruptive behavior. As our parents and guardians, it's important to bring you into this important conversation about expectations and positive alternatives.
On Monday, during the morning announcements, we reminded all middle and high school students of the district’s behavioral expectations. First and foremost, fighting will not be tolerated. Furthermore, instead of reposting negative things on social media or filming altercations, students were encouraged to seek out adults for assistance. Students who participate in fights or post threats to social media will receive consequences - including significant suspensions of up to a year - as outlined in our Code of Conduct.
Throughout our 6-12 classrooms over the next three weeks, students will receive consistent lessons about social media, bullying, and being a positive bystander. We will share the lessons with you at the end of the series so that you are aware of messages delivered and so you can also reinforce these messages at home. Remind your children that fighting creates more problems than it solves and negative social media posts reflect poorly on them, our schools, and can have serious consequences.
Please know that the adults in our schools care about your children and are eager to help them with whatever they need - socially, emotionally and academically. The safest schools are those where staff and students confide in one another.
We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership as we work to build a safe and positive environment for students. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your building principal.
Sincerely,
Kathy Graupman
Superintendent of Schools
