From the Principal's Desk
These lines make me think of the popularized idea of "failing forward". Some children spend too much time over-thinking or worrying about what could go wrong. When in that mindset, it helps to teach that it is important to take action and think about all the things that could go right!
Swift action which throws caution to the wind may end in disappointment . . . or worse. Inaction and overthinking will likely doom you to a lack of progress or failure to attempt. We also may become impatient with a child's ability to finish something in a certain amount of time. It's important to remember that learning takes time. Doing things for our kids may have the negative effect of making them dependent. If we truly want to prepare them for the future we must allow space for our children to fail.
In working with our young people we should look to strike a balance. "Pay attention" might be a better phrase to use in place of "be careful". We can also encourage reflection without stifling action by offering a question like, "what have you learned thus far?".
The reality is that failure hurts the ego, while a lack of progress doesn't produce confidence. What type of disposition does/do your child/children have? How can you nudge or challenge them to grow?

STEAM
- Our kindergarten group has just started their structure and function of the human body unit.
- First grade will be starting their light and sound unit. They will be creating a device that will help rescue them from getting lost in the woods.
- Second grade will begin a unit that will talk about erosion and they'll be challenged with finding a way to save a city from being washed away!
- Third grade is wrapping up their complex machine builds and will be demonstrating how they work in their next session.
- 4th graders will be testing their cars this week. We're going to see who has cracked the kinetic energy code and can keep their eggs safe.
- Lastly, 5th grade is finishing their robot builds. I have been very impressed with their progress with these.

The high school Student Council is participating in Project Night Light with Helen DeVos Childrens' Hospital on Wednesday, December 14th.
In coordination with that event, the high school students didn't want to go empty handed, so we are showing Elf on Tuesday, December 6th at the Eagle Auditorium at 7:00. We are asking that as admission you bring in a toy from the high need list put out by HDCH.
