From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

We made it through the first week of the school year! It was great to have our classes back together. I'm excited to say that every single class moved through our beginning of the year material quickly, and every ensemble played during class on Friday! I'm excited by the sounds we heard and looking forward to what the groups will accomplish throughout the year ahead.

If we just met your student in class this Wednesday, welcome to the Winter Park Band! We are so glad that you are here with us! Two things I need to ask of our very new families, and they both are time sensitive. 1) Please visit www.winterparkhsband.com/register.html and complete the Google Registration Form. This will allow us to add you to our electronic communication. 2) Please have your student attend this Tuesday's ECG Screening Night at WPHS. All Band students need a current physical and ECG to participate in marching band, and this opportunity is the easiest way to have the ECG done. Visit www.whoweplayfor.org/heart-screening-registration-orange-county and sign your student up for a screening time.

This week continues our regular Tuesday evening, Thursday after school rehearsal schedule for marching band. Tuesday evenings we rehearse from 6 - 8:30 PM and Thursdays from 2:45 - 5 PM. This schedule rarely changes so our families are able to consistently plan their weeks. All of our Band events start promptly at the time indicated on the calendar, and as the old adage goes:

"To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is unacceptable."

On Thursday evening this week, the Sound of the Wildcats will perform at the "Meet the Cats" pep rally in the WPHS Auditorium. Students need to remember to bring all pieces of their Summer Uniform (2022 Show Shirt, tan/khaki shorts, belt, athletic shoes, and socks) to school with them on Thursday morning. Between marching band rehearsal and the pep rally, dinner will be provided for all students. During that dinner break, students will change into uniform for the performance.

Water Bottle Donations Needed: The Band is in need of water bottle donations. We provide bottles of water to our students at many events as well as providing water bottles to visiting marching bands at our home football games. Donated water bottles need to be 12oz, no smaller. This year, we will be giving a prize to the section of the marching band that brings in the most water donations. Please clearly mark a donated pack of water bottles with the student name and section. Water donations can be dropped off at any time in the Band room, and donations are due by Friday, 8/26. Thank you in advance!

Our fundraiser with the biggest direct-to-student benefit of the year is happening now! Please see below in Julie Capps' Program Ads and Sponsorships Fundraiser section of the newsletter for more details. This fundraiser is easy, and students get 60% of any ad space they sell back into their account as credit. Parents: one easy way to use this fundraiser could benefit you - take out a "shoutout" ad for your student and get 60% of that purchase directly back to you in the form of credit! Extended family can also become a Sponsor in the name of your student and 100% of that money goes to them as credit. If you have questions, please contact Julie via email.

Tomorrow, 8/15, we will hold a NYC Tour Information Meeting in the Band room from 7 - 8 PM. During the meeting we will discuss the preliminary itinerary of the trip, the events students will perform/participate in, and the preliminary quoted cost. We'll also talk about how to utilize fundraisers to offset the cost of your trip. The trip is open to all Band students regardless of grade level or ensemble placement, and all instrumentalists on the trip will have at least one performance opportunity.

Good luck to the football team at their exhibition game this week. We look forward to our first game of the year next Friday, 8/26 at Showalter Field!

Have a great week!

Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson

Hi Band! Hope that first half-week went well for you all! It's kind of nice that we don't start football games for a couple of weeks .. gives us some more time to prepare before Marching Season begins!

And preparing we've been doing .. the marching band is looking and sounding great out at D-Lot. And uniform prep is taking shape to make the band look amazing as well. Much appreciation to Amanda Schaefer and the Uniform Squad parents who helped out this past Tuesday. These rock stars helped get so much work done! There are still a few slots open to help out with uniform prep .. so sign up for that here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-uniform

Speaking of uniforms .. Concert uniforms that were fitted will be available for pick up the evening of Tuesday August 16th after practice - starting at 8:00pm in the hallway just outside the band room. It is the student's responsibility to get any concert pants or dresses hemmed or pressed to be ready for our October 18th Fall concert. Have your student try that uniform on within a week or so after it comes home so you'll have plenty of time to have any alterations made.

If your student's uniform doesn't fit once you get it home, please reach out to Andrea Rediske (andrea.rediske@gmail.com) for instructions. If your student has not yet been fitted for a concert or marching uniform, please have them let the directors know ASAP and we will fit them during practice or class, as needed.

A few suggestions for where to get your uniform altered:
Tina's Master Tailor's Inc
Kim & Tailor Alteration LLC
Rosa's Designs & Alterations
Thai's Alterations & Tailoring ,Inc

Another thank you to the parents who have volunteered to chaperone football games. We've filled a lot of spots, but have a handful left for almost each game .. please check your calendars and sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-football

And one more plug for selling Concert Program ads .. a great way to pay for band fees and the cost for the June NYC trip at the end of the year! Program ad sales are due September 9th .. Program ads info is here (about a 1/3 down the page): http://www.winterparkhsband.com/band-boosters.html

Questions or concerns? Don't forget to reach out to any of the board members (http://www.winterparkhsband.com/band-boosters.html) or directors.

Have a great week, Band People! See you soon!

Program Ads and Sponsorships Fundraiser - Due 9/9

Hello WPHS Band Families!

***Raise Money Now to Offset your Fair Share Payments and NYC Trip Costs!***

The season for selling ads in the Winter Park High Band program is well underway. If you are not familiar with this program, the Winter Park Band Concert Program features pictures of the Band as well as information about the band’s instructor and members. The program is distributed free at all concerts throughout the school year and includes local business ads, student dedications and sponsorships purchased by local businesses and families.

With the band scheduled to take a group trip to New York City in June 2023, it is important you understand how purchasing or selling an ad in the band program can help you save money on that trip. Any ad sold by your student can help defray your financial obligations to Band, including payment for the NYC trip. Once payment for the ad is received, the student’s Band account will be credited with 60% of the ad revenue that he/she sells, depending on the Band’s printing cost.

Here's how selling just one ad can benefit you:

  • Sell a full-page ad ($325) to your kid’s orthodontist? You’ll get an estimated $195 credit on your account that can then be used toward the cost of the NYC trip.
  • Celebrate your Band Student with a ½ page student dedication? While the ad will cost you $175, you will then get a credit back of roughly $105 that can go back towards your payments to band. This is especially popular with Senior families, but the family of any student can put a shoutout into the program.

The three types of advertising available are:

  • Business Ad: Connect your local business or a business you frequent with audiences attended WPHS band performances throughout the school year.
  • Student Dedication: Celebrate your student’s participation in the WPHS band program with a ¼, ½ or full-page ad that can include multiple pictures.
  • Sponsorship: Become a “Friend of Winter Park Band” with a monetary donation and recognition on the sponsorship list. This is a great option for family and friends who ask how they can support your student in band.

The deadline for selling or purchasing an ad is quickly approaching. So that the program can be printed in time for the first home concert, all ads must be purchased or sold by Friday, September 9, 2022. Forms for the ad program can be accessed on the WPHS Band website by clicking About>Band Boosters. All files are located under the section Program Ads and Sponsors 2022.

Have additional questions? Contact Julie Capps, Program Ads & Sponsors Coordinator at 704- 258-3306 or juliedcapps@aol.com.

    Big picture

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement

We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.

Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.

In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.

Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:

    • Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
    • Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
    • Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
    • Replace wheel bearings on front axle
    • Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
    • Replacing or repairing the small trailer
    • And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.

Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.

Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.
