MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS
77th Edition: July 6, 2018
Pilgrims on the Way of Truth
Summer Updates from the Principal
Happy Fourth of July and welcome to the heart of summertime! It seems like only a short while ago since our students completed Second Semester Finals and the Class of 2018 graduated! Now here we are, half way through our summer vacation! I hope your family has been taking full advantage of the time off, to decompress, get reconnected, and enjoy God’s gifts!
Just to catch you up on a few things that are going on here at Marian…
Our custodial and office staff are busy working to make sure everything is clean, up to date, and in order for the new school year.
The building’s entire technology infrastructure has been updated in preparation for our big technology roll out this fall! Please see the section below for more details on what to expect about every student receiving a laptop for their educational use here at Marian!
On that same note, we will be notifying everyone when the One-to-One Technology Handbook covering various policies and procedures is completed, as we will need all students and families to be aware of the uses and restrictions concerning technology use here at Marian. Once completed, we will be linking it to the Marian website.
We have several new faculty member joining the Marian family for the fall. Once the list is finalized, we will be publishing a little background on each one of them.
The new, updated Student Handbook for 2018-19 will be completed within the next few weeks and will be linked to the website. Please make sure that you and your student(s) review it carefully, as there are several much needed updates that you will need to be aware of.
Our school is continuing to develop new ways to ensure that we at Marian Central are living our Mission of Welcoming, Proclaiming, Forming, and Sending our students off to become Pilgrims on the Way of Truth. With Father Twenty joining our school community, we are certainly excited to continue being mission-driven in everything that we do.
Our school is going full “STREAM” ahead! Not only have our teachers continued their curriculum work, ensuring that we are delivering the best, most relevant and rigorous curriculum possible, but we are also in the process of developing critical cross-curricular connections amongst all departments here at Marian. STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math. As educators, we are well aware that none of the subjects that we teach here stands in isolation. Instead, there are clear, interweaving concepts and skills that we at Marian are working to develop so that our students can see clear connections and value within and among all they learn here. For example, with our IDEA/IncubatorEdu program, as our students develop their own product or service, they require writing skills for developing proposals. They use their speaking skills as they “pitch” their ideas. Science, art, engineering, technology, and mathematics are all used as they actually develop prototypes. Finally, all of what the students do… developing a respectable business, creating a product that aligns with our Catholic morals and values, and how they cooperate and collaborate with their business partners… all relate to the religion that our students learn and live as students of Marian Central.
We are very excited to not only to develop a solid, faith-filled curriculum, but to continue our collaboration with all of the McHenry Deanery schools to ensure that a solid foundation at the elementary level will become a clear stepping stone to joining our Marian family.
As you can see, we have a lot in store for our students and families, and are looking forward to the new school year! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out! The entire Administrative Team is here for our students, faculty, and families.
In Christ,
Debra Novy
Principal
Meet Our New Spiritual Director: Father Twenty!
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I’m Father Twenty, the new Spiritual Director here at Marian. I’m very excited to be a part of this wonderful community of faith and learning. I love ministering to the youth and have a passion for Catholic Education, so I was thrilled when Bishop Malloy gave me this assignment!
I’m just about getting settled in. The books are on the shelves, the wifi code is entered, and I think I’ve figured out the copy machine! Things are pretty quiet around the school right now, which has given me the chance to get acquainted. When school starts I can really hit the ground running.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to be working here. All of the staff, faculty, and students I have met so far have been very kind and welcoming. I ask that you please pray for me in my new role here, and I assure you of my daily prayers for all of you and your families.
God bless,
Fr. 20
A message from our Interim Superintendent
Dear Marian Parents,
Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Vito DeFrisco and I am delighted to accept this very important position as Interim Superintendent. Marian Central Catholic High School is very special to me. Two of my three children attended Marian and were well prepared for college. Both have earned their Master degrees and are currently working in education. I live in Crystal Lake with my wife and son who is working as a welder.
I am a product of Catholic education and I have worked in school administration for over 25 years. As a school administrator, I have been blessed with many opportunities that included two trips to Nsukka, Nigeria to help establish a model school, a Catholic Education system, and to provide professional development for their teachers and administrators.
This is my second employment opportunity in the Rockford Diocese. Prior to my current position, I worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago for eleven years as principal of St. Hubert School in Hoffman Estates. My first experience in the Rockford Diocese was working here at Marian Central as the first Development Director from 1994 until 1998.
While acting as your Interim Superintendent, I will also be maintaining my office at the Diocesan Administrative Building in Rockford as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Rockford Diocese.
I am looking forward to developing a strong partnership with each of you as we work together to move Marian’s mission forward. Marian Central Catholic High School is an excellent school and will continue to provide an outstanding faith-based academic program preparing students for the next chapter in their educational journey.
I look forward to working with each of you.
Sincerely in Christ,
Vito C. DeFrisco
Interim Superintendent
Marian Central Catholic High School

New One-To-One Technology Program Comes to Marian
Starting the 2018-19 school year, each student at Marian Central Catholic High School (grades 9th through 12th) will be issued an HP ProBook x360 Notebook PC for daily educational use. This will be replacing the “Bring your own Technology” policy that Marian had in place for the past several years.
This new initiative fulfills Marian’s Technology mission and vision including…
To offer students an avenue to practice digital Catholic citizenship
To encourage meaningful, individualized exploration of deeper knowledge
To inspire cooperative learning while providing opportunities for effective communication
To address multiple learning styles
To measure student learning and provide timely feedback to better inform instruction
To foster skills for an authentic and relevant education that will prepare students for post high school graduation experiences
Watch the Marian website for more information on the rollout and distribution of the devices. We will soon be having a “Frequently Asked Questions” section for your convenience that will answer many of the questions you may be having about this exciting new initiative!
MBS Online Bookstore NOW OPEN! + FREE SHIPPING 7/9 - 7/15
Here is the 2018-2019 Book List (listed by course title) Please review this handy list - there are some courses that provide the textbook in class (at no charge to you) - and are noted as such on this list, as well as on MBS online.
A few things to consider as you shop for the school textbooks:
- Have your student's course list handy, so you select the correct courses in the bookstore.
- For many books, you will have the options of purchasing new, used, or eBook. If you are choosing the eBook - it's ok to go ahead and purchase the eBook access code - but WAIT until your student has the device to actually activate the access. If it is a downloadable book, you'll want to use the one-time download to place it on the student's device. Devices will be distributed within the first weeks of school this fall.
- Course/Instructor notes are posted within MBS. For example - if instructor welcomes eBook versions of books, that note will appear when you are viewing that course through MBS!
- MBS is very similar to Amazon in pricing. The advantage of MBS is that they offer guaranteed book buy-back and have a great buy-back guide for you to follow at the end of the school year.
- MBS has been provided with class enrollment numbers to ensure that books listed will be available - and not on back-order!
USED TEXTBOOKS STILL AVAILABLE IN OUR INVENTORY!
LIMITED USED BOOKS STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT MARIAN CENTRAL!
Used Books are still available to purchase through the school office. We are discounting the books 25% off the listed prices. A list of books available is on the website under News and Announcements. Please note - this was our FINAL year offering the Used Book Sale program.
Quarterly Tuition Payment Due July 18th
If you are choosing to pay your student's tuition on a QUARTERLY schedule, your first payment and fees will be due JULY 18th.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a course fee of $30 for any students taking English 9th through 11th grade that will be added to the existing fee schedule. This fee covers all online access for Grammar and Vocabulary - and completely replaces the need to purchase a vocabulary workbook!
