Thunderstorms
How thunderstorms are formed:
Thunderstorms begin with a strong updraft of air, usually when a cold front moves in on a warm front.
The Three Stages of Thunderstorms:
- cumulus stage - the updraft causes a cumulus cloud to form and grow rapidly; this stage lasts for about 20 minutes
- mature stage - heavy rain, thunder, lightening, strong winds, possible hail; causes winds to blow downward (downdrafts)
- dissipation stage - occurs when the downdrafts overpower the updrafts of air
Why are thunderstorms dangerous?
They are accompanied by lightening and sometimes by tornadoes.
