Staff Newsletter - Week of 05/06/19
Have you all really thought about the impact you have? Why you do this hard work everyday? As educators and support staff within a school, we have the difficult job of doing our part....which sometimes include lots of different things.....to make sure that our school is safe and runs efficiently. We do things daily to make sure that we show that we care for our students and for each other.
I saw a great example of this last week in one of our ASD classes. Picture this....the teacher is out, there is a sub and the para in the classroom. A student begins to have a meltdown which includes trying to hit and kick anyone in his path. Now this student hasn't had a meltdown in a while. But this time, the student was not responding to the attempts to calm down. Counting down wasn't working, time out, snacks, nothing. When I stopped by to check on the class, I didn't just see a student in distress. I saw the teacher from next door and paras from other classes helping! The sub, was doing a small group lesson to keep the other students calm. But, the extra staff came to help! They helped the para get the very strong student to time out, helped him to count down, and gathered his favorite snacks. A teacher from another class called the parent so she could provide assistance. Everyone knew the student, knew what do and even comforted the mother when she arrived at the school. The para took the extra time to walk the mother out with the student to make sure they both got in the car safely. What an awesome example of our theme....Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!!!
This week we are celebrating the teachers and staff at Partee! Thank you for your hard work and commitment to the students in your class, on your grade level, and in the school. Like the story above, make sure you thank your colleagues for checking your mailbox, picking up something for your class, reminding you of a deadline or covering for you when you are running late....see what I did there? :-). We are going to celebrate all week but it's the thank yous while we are in the trenches that help us make it through the day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
So, the year is winding down pretty quickly. We only have 13 days of school left with the students. Near the end of the year we inevitably begin to experience an increase in negative behaviors as students get anxious about closing out the school year. As adults, it is important to be sure that we are monitoring the students and teaching bell to bell. Please make sure that you are:
1. Following your schedule.
2. Providing effective lessons that are aligned to the standards everyday.
3. Closely monitoring students on the playground.
4. Communicating concerns parents.
Have a great week of teaching and learning!
