Mental health supports for students are important
Dear families,
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of mental health support for students. The pressures of academic life, social interactions, and personal challenges can take a toll on their mental well-being.
Here at Duluth Public Schools, we have been able to boost our mental health supports for students with federal COVID-19 funding, but that funding ends June 30.
On Tuesday, Nov. 7 we are asking residents of our district to consider a referendum (question one), which if passed, would allow us to continue these mental health supports.
All we are asking is that residents make an informed decision at the ballot box Tuesday. So please visit FutureForward709.org/Plan to learn more about the referendums in the ballot. There is a cost with the referendum and we know taxes have been increasing recently. The cost of question one for an average assessment value of a home in Duluth — $289,000 — would cost about $1 per month if approved.
As we approach School Psychology Week (Nov. 6-10), it's crucial to recognize the invaluable role school psychologists play in nurturing the well-being of our students. These dedicated professionals go above and beyond to support our children's academic, social, and emotional growth, ensuring they have the tools to succeed not just in school, but in life.
School psychologists are the unsung heroes in our education system. They provide essential services, offering counseling, assessments, and interventions to help students overcome challenges and thrive.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the district and remember to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 7!
Thank you,
John Magas
Superintendent

Dear Families,
November is #AttendanceHERO Month at Duluth Public Schools. HERO stands for Here, Every day, Ready and On time!
We will be sharing information over the month of November in our newsletter and on our social media about the importance of good attendance.
There are so many benefits to good attendance all year long, including:
Reading proficiency
Staying engaged
Remaining on track to graduate
Building life long habits
And more!
Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, be successful and stay on track to graduate. By sixth grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school. By ninth grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than eighth grade test scores.
So we are asking students, teachers, parents, guardians and community members to partner with us in making sure our students get to school safe and sound every day.
Let’s make every moment count. The campaign to end chronic absenteeism starts now!
Sincerely,
Anthony Bonds
Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Equity

Pancakes make science delicious
Piedmont 2nd graders learned about changing states of matter for science today! We showed water—to ice—to water for learning physical changes of matter and made pancakes for chemical changes of matter (liquid pancake batter—to a solid pancake)! To conclude these experiments…these scientists got to eat their pancakes!
What an outstanding hands on learning experience!
Bravo, Ms. Akervik, Ms. Perttula and Ms. Huber!
Celebrating Día de los Muertos
On November 1 and 2, Lowell Elementary commemorated the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), a rich tradition observed in Mexican culture. This year Lowell’s Nueva Vision Spanish Immersion program, was excited to share this remembrance school-wide to foster a greater sense of cultural understanding and inclusivity among our students.
To mark this occasion, each classroom received a loaf of pan de muertos, a special bread traditionally made for Dia de los Muertos. Additionally, an altar was set up near the library for everyone to visit and pay their respects.
