Curriculum & Assessment News

Kdg. & Grade 1 Evaluate Testing Window

Kindergarten and First Grade students will have 4 assessments per year. Below are the dates those assessment will be visible. Students can test any time during the assessment window.

• Form A – 9/3-11/16 (Sept-Nov)

• Form B – 11/19- 2/15 (Nov – Feb)

• Form C – 2/18 – 4/12 (Feb – April)

• Post Test (Duplicate of Form A) 4/15 – 6/30 (April-June)

Assessment Details

The Evaluate assessment should be given in a specific window of time. It is best to conduct the assessment during one sitting or break it up into two sections. Best practice would be to send absent student to the make-up testing sessions set up in the Computer Lab.

The human reader should be used only for those students that have that modification written in their IEP or ELL plan.

Focusing on the Whole Child

Helping a students manage their emotions can be difficult when the teacher is trying to teach a whole class. However, if the teacher don't stop to assist the student having difficulty, could lead to a major class disruption. Thanksgiving up until the New Year, families deal with a lot of stress. We often see and feel that stress in our students when we are trying to educate them. Yet, their young brains cannot deal with the stress and learning at the same time. Teachers should take a deep breath, seek assistance from a counselor or coworker, and give the student time to de-escalate before the learning resumes. Mrs. Flexsenhar, Mrs. Suerig, and Mrs. Dunn have a lot of resources to assist students and staff dealing with trauma or stress. Here are two videos that can provide teachers & staff with tips on how to manage trauma in the school environment.

Odyssey Information:

Dawn Bristow gave a wonderful presentation on Odyssey referrals. I have included the online Google form for referrals. Please keep in mind that if a student has an IEP then they have already been screened for Odyssey. If they qualify for Odyssey they will be entered into the program at that time. If you have a question about whether they have been tested, please ask me. I'd be happy to find out for you!

Big picture

Project Based Learning Idea

A fun one. For any grade level.

It is based on the fact that there is no special character who personifies Thanksgiving, such as Santa Claus for Christmas or the Easter Bunny for Easter (or even Cupid on Valentine's Day or a leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day).

So, students must think about what Thanksgiving Day is all about, and create a character to represent Thanksgiving. This includes the character's name, personality, colors, clothing, accessories, and even the backstory.
