Early Life
Heather Whitestone, was born on February 24, 1973, hearing. She lost most hearing due to illness by the age of 18 months. Born in Dothan, Alabama, she attended a regular public school until falling behind on class work, when she began attending residential until catching up with her grade level.
First Deaf Miss America
At the age of 21, she became not only the very first deaf, but technically "disabled" Miss America in the pageants history. Throughout her year as Miss america, she created a program called "S.T.A.R.S" or "Success Through Action and Realization of your dreams" which encourages teens to take action and pursue what they are most fond of.
