Collaborative Note-Taking with Google Drive
Everyone knows that I am a huge fan of all things GOOGLE. I know that there are some pitfalls to using technology {not able to get the carts, internet going down, etc...}. But here is just one more Google Doc idea to shove down your throats - Collaborative Note-Taking. There are two things that I absolutely LOVE about GOOGLE - automatically saves and the collaborative features.
How to introduce collaborative note-taking:
- Create the Google Doc and build a table inside the document.
- Assign each column a different topic: definitions, digital tools, integration ideas, and instructional strategies.
- Then assign one person to each topic. It is less overwhelming when you are responsible for taking notes on only one topic. It’s also a great way to model note-taking strategies.
- Pre-populate the table with information you have already covered in the introduction--giving students a starting place and a model.
- The rest of the students are encouraged to contribute, but those assigned to take notes have the official responsibility. The class will take turns as official note-takers, giving each participant an opportunity to contribute and learn a little more about Google Docs.
Celebrating Black History Month
Black History Month had its beginnings in 1926 in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson announced the second week of February would be set aside to celebrate African-American history. This week was chosen because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Black History Week grew in popularity throughout the following decades, with mayors across the United States endorsing it as a holiday. In 1976, the federal government acknowledged the expansion of Black History Week to Black History Month by the leaders of the Black United Students at Kent State University in February of 1969. The first celebration of Black History Month occurred at Kent State in February of 1970. Six years later during the bicentennial, Black History Month was recognized by the U.S. government. Gerald Ford spoke in regards to this, urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

Citation Station
It is always important to give appropriate credit to the sources used when doing any type of research. After working with students this week, I have learned that they have not fully grasp the concept of creating proper MLA citations. I have created a CITATION STATION in the library computer lab to help. There are forms that students can use to learn how to write correct MLA citations.
