Supporting Language Learners
Remember that this week is the first week we may begin collecting writing samples for TELPAS and that these need to be taken from lessons and experiences grounded in the TEKS and ELPS as part of regular classroom instruction. Please reach out to Jennifer if you or your team would like further assistance in choosing appropriate topics or types of writing samples to gather from your learners or if you need help in any other way with the PLDs and upcoming calibrations.
Here are more strategies to create a language-rich, interactive classroom for our language learners, which can really help us set up our language learners for success through deeper understanding of content:
Step 5: Use Targeted Visuals and Vocabulary Strategies
Visuals increase student ability to understand class lessons and discussions. Visuals can be pictures, photos, drawings, movie clips, concrete objects, and graphic organizers. This Sketchnote and the video created by Valentina Gonzalez highlight different types of helpful visuals and strategies such as the Picture Word Inductive Model strategy.
Vocabulary Strategies
Incorporating academic vocabulary in all of our lessons is vital for our ELs. Here are two specific strategies:
Scanning
Students survey a text (word problem, paragraph, lab, etc…) looking for unfamiliar words.
Teacher generates a list of three to ten unfamiliar terms based on student findings.
Teacher writes short student-friendly definitions based on how it is used in the text.
Students practice pronouncing the words during a choral reading with the teacher.
- Students read the text.
- Students practice the words through speaking and writing tasks in the lesson.
