Monday Nights at Smitty's

The Parent Advisory Council is still hosting the "Chase the Ace" fundraiser every Monday night at Smitty's from 7:00-9:00 pm. This fundraiser is to raise money for our Activity Structure! So far we have sold approximately $750.00 worth of tickets, and the Ace is still in the deck!

How Chase the Ace works:

Come to Smitty's - buy a ticket ($5/ticket). Your name is put in a draw and at 8:55 whoever has bought a ticket that evening has a chance to win 20% of the ticket sales collected that evening. If you happen to pull the Ace of Spades, you will win 50% of the entire pot we have collected from January 7th (which currently is close to $375).

As long as the Ace continues to hide, the pot will continue to grow!

Come out to Smitty's with friends/family and have some fun playing Chase the Ace with us!

Celebration of Learning

Wednesday, March 20th

Come and join us this Wednesday, March 20th, as we celebrate what your child has learned in our classes.

All parents are welcome to attend with their students on a "come and go" basis from 4:30-7:30 p.m. (no appointments needed). The student will show you what they have been doing in class, and you will also have an opportunity to speak to the teacher.

Out of respect to all the parents and students in the room, please keep your conversation brief and positive. If you feel you need a more in-depth conversation, please let the teacher know and a time can be arranged to meet.

We look forward to you coming to our Celebration of Learning!

Report Cards

A Friendly Reminder!

If you have requested to receive report cards electronically, they will be available through the HSD Parent Portal site - they will not be emailed directly to you. Report cards will be posted on the Parent Portal by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15th.

If you have forgotten your Parent Portal username or password, please contact the school or email to ask for your information to be reset.

Using the Parent Portal is a great way to keep up to date with your child's progress at school (attendance, fee account, updating addresses, report cards, etc.) and if you have not yet signed up for this valuable online tool and need some direction, please feel free to let us know and we will be happy to help you!

Instructions for the Parent Portal can be downloaded (link below).

Demographic Changes

Grade 8 parents have been asked to update and verify their demographic information through the HSD Parent Portal for their child's entry into the SRSS for Fall of 2019.

This is a great time for everyone (Grade 5's to 7's) to have a look at their demographics (if you haven't done so recently) and make sure that we have the correct information on your child's student file. Please make sure your address, email addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts are all up to date, so that we can communicate with you.

Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Looking Back on February...

Artist in the School

During January and February, we had the privilege of having an "Artist in the School" by the name of Daina Leitold. She spent time with each class, working on character creations and mime skills. She worked with the Grade 8 drama students on their presentation for the Celebration of the Arts. She also explored Social Studies concepts through drama with the Grade 6 and 7 students. It was a new and fun way to learn!

Celebration of the Arts

On February 13th, our Grade 8 students showcased some of the Art (drama, visual, digital) they have been working on during the year. Boards were covered with visual art creations and the drama students put on a series of vignettes depicting student life. Thank you to Mrs. Loewen, Mrs. Desautels and Mr. Wiebe and the Art students for putting on an enjoyable evening for us!

Jazz Band Festival

The Grade 8 Jazz Band worked really hard in preparation for their festival performance in Winnipeg. Congratulations on representing SMS well!

I Love to Read Month

Reading is a skill that all students will use daily throughout their life. Here at SMS we try to support this skill in a variety of ways, including promoting a love of reading for each of our students.

For the month of February, each class added up daily reading minutes with the goal being 100 hours per class. Several classes reached this goal. Congratulations to 5F, 5R, 6B, 7J, 7H, 7K, 8D, 8G, 8M who each reached over 100 hours for the month. The top class of avid readers for the month was 8N, who finished with a whopping 345 hours!

Students created quilt blocks that represented their favourite book which were then put together to create classroom book quilts. Many students participated in creating bookmarks that will be used in our library. And once again, we were fortunate to have members of the Pistons visit our school to read stories, answer questions and play an invigorating game of floor hockey in the gym.

Reading is alive and well at SMS!
