October 2018
Library Lessons in the Month of October
- Sammy the Shelf Marker will show kindergarten students how to use shelf markers when selecting books. Kinder students are always so excited when they get to pick from the shelves! Students will continue to practice using the self-checkout circulation system in the library.
- A scavenger hunt will show first-grade students how the online catalog and the Dewey system can help them navigate the Wallace Library or any library.
- After a read aloud ofTwenty-One Elephants and Still Standing by April Jones Prince, second-grade students will engage in design-thinking challenges that encourage them to think critically and collaborate while working in together to build bridges.
- Curating helps students parcel through excessive information to determine what is useful to them. Third and fourth-grade students will begin curating books lists of favorite books and making bucket lists of books they want to read using Google Slides. This curation will continue throughout the year. Students will later share their lists with classmates so all can benefit from the collective curation.
- An emphasis on digital citizenship supports fifth and sixth-grade students responsible use of devices at school. A digital breakout session will allow students to make connections with real world scenarios of why rules and policies matter and help create order in our society.
- Custom-created sites support students as they begin research projects this month. While researching, the sites provide access to online resources, organizers to capture their research, and EdTech options to share their learning.
