Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Three Week 10 - 21 September 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
It is hard to believe that the term has quickly come to an end. Earlier in the week we held our final Assembly for Term 3. The highlight of the Assembly was the announcement of the 2019 Year 12 Student Leadership Team. The names of the students are listed below:
· College Captains: Briar Norman and James Rourke
· Deputy College Captains: Teal Cuff and Romick Ediriweera
· Francis House Captain: Melissa Heane
· Frassati House Captain: Sophie Brewer
· Lisieux House Captain: Teal Cuff
· MacKillop House Captain: Stephanie Calderaro
· More House Captain: Jasmine Gosney
· Teresa House Captain: Sarah Gilmour
· Arts Captains: Romick Ediriweera and Connor McCabrey
· Community Captain: Ashleigh Muller
· Environmental Captain: Lara Smith
· Sport Captains: Kirstie Crommelin and Alessandro De Andrade Basto
My congratulations to all the students selected and I wish them well in their leadership role for 2019.
Today the Year 12 students celebrated their last day at the College. The day commenced with a breakfast with staff and a few other planned activities across the day including a farewell Assembly from each of their Houses. Some of our Year 12 students will be completing their ATAR Practical Examinations next week. The following week commencing on 1 October they commence their End of Year Examinations concluding on Thursday 12, October. The College community extends our best wishes to all our Year 12 students sitting examinations.
A reminder to all parents who have younger children to commence Year 7 in 2021, that enrolment applications are required by the end of the 2018 academic year. Whilst we already have enough applications to fill Year 7 positions for 2021, we do not commence our interviews until the beginning of the 2019 academic year.
Over the last few weeks the College has made some staff appointments for 2019. Whilst I will summarise all staff changes for 2019 in a later Newsletter in Term 4, I have summarised those who have been appointed to leadership positions.
· Head of English – Miss Vanessa Daly (from St Brigid’s College)
· Director of GATE - Dr Lynette Field
· Director of Home Economics – Mrs Anne Bennett (from Kolbe Catholic College)
· Netball Coordinator – Miss Clare de Reus (from Ursula Frayne Catholic College)
Next term, all students, Years 7 to 11, begin on Wednesday 10 October. Students will be required to be attired in summer uniform for Term 4. The College Uniform Shop is open on additional days during the holidays to assist parents with this transition. These dates are listed below.
I thank and congratulate, Mr James Silver, Mr Jarrod Parry, Miss Zoey Baxter, Ms Jenae Camp, Mr Peter Sackett and Dr Lynette Field who took on extra responsibilities during Term 3. Their dedication and commitment to their roles during the term was much appreciated.
Today we said farewell, for the short term, to Miss Sarah Deacon who has taken leave for the remainder of this year and all of 2019. I thank Mr Brendan Falvey, Ms Ann-Marie Frazier, Mr Shane Young and Mrs Patricia Grey who replaced teachers on leave through Term 3. I also congratulate and extend our best wishes to the six University of Notre Dame students who have successfully completed their Teaching Practice at Emmanuel this term.
Finally I wish all the staff and students a safe and enjoyable holiday. I look forward to their return to school with a renewed energy for a busy Term 4.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

Elio & Bruno
We haven't heard from Elio & Bruno for a while so here's a light hearted little fable with which to finish the term.
Once, a large number of frogs lived happily in a well. One day, two of the biggest frogs got involved in a fierce fight. Needless to say, they were our old friends Elio and Bruno.
The frog community became divided, half supporting Elio, and the other half, Bruno. The feud grew and each group became more vindictive and violent.
One day, Elio's gang called upon a snake who lived nearby and asked "Please come to live in our well and eat up our enemies, Bruno's group."
The snake agreed to come and stay in their well. Each day he would gobble down three of Bruno's supporters. Soon Bruno and his friends were all eaten.
Then Elio asked the snake to leave the well as the job was done. But by now, the snake had developed a liking for frogs' legs and other froggy bits. So he refused to leave and stayed there, eating up Elio and all the other frogs too!
Once again, our silly friends Elio and Bruno lost out because they forgot to resolve their differences before they grew out of control.

YEAR 11 PHYSICS EXCURSION
Eleven thrill-seeking Year 11 Physics students explored the wonders of Adventure World on Thursday 20 September.
Taking themselves to new heights and new G-forces, the students spent the physics day hosted by STAWA to explore hands on physics concepts. This encourages students to see the physics side of everyday activities.
Students battled the mighty Kraken and took the exciting Goliath for a spin. Throughout the day students gathered data ranging from, the speeds of slides, angles of rides and the towering height of towers to calculate different results to do with momentum. It certainly was a valuable day out at Adventure World.

R U OK IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Last week the Emmanuel community celebrated R U OK? Day. R U OK?'s vision is a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide.
Their mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. Their goals are to:
1. Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life's ups and downs
2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others
3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us
4. Be relevant, strong and dynamic
R U OK? was celebrated by the Emmanuel community in many different ways to highlight the important effect that asking a simple question can have on making a difference in someone’s life.
Last week there were activities in Religious Education classes which aimed to encourage a conversation around mental health and to show that all students already have the knowledge to help others. It is our Catholic responsibility to see Christ in all that we encounter, and to help the most vulnerable in our society. This includes our friends, families and acquaintances.
Each Religious Education class created paper chains which were decorated with prayers and Bible passages about helping others. Displays were created from these paper chains in the shape of a crucifix and placed around the school. This symbolises the fact that we are all connected in the Body of Christ, and so we have the responsibility of looking after everyone in our human family.
So the next time you see someone looking down, start a conversation by asking R U OK?
Miss Gillian Lugton - Acting Head of Religious Education

THAT SCOTTISH PLAY – YEAR 9 & 10 DRAMA PRODUCTION
Our Year 9 and 10 students will begin preparing their big finale to their drama year. As part of their final assessment we will be staging a comedic parody of the Shakespeare play MacBeth.
This will be a student run production with limited seating available so you need to get in quick. It proves to be a very clever and fun script with random and hilarious moments lead by 3 witches filled with silliness and mischief.
We will be doing things a little different by creating an interactive and intimate performance space that really breaks ‘the 4th wall’ of the theatre. Watch out for smoking cauldrons, deception, drama and the occasional flying eyeball and my little pony! A night to be experienced and remembered.
The show will be performed on one night only 5 November 2018 at 5pm.
Come along and support our drama students!
Tickets $2 each on Trybooking, search: That Scottish Play
