Message from Principal Wiegand

Dear Bel Air families,

Bel Air Elementary School is a PBIS school. (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) We use the PBIS framework to help create a positive learning environment where students learn how to be respectful, responsible and ready to learn. Our Second Step program focuses on teaching students social-emotional skills to apply when interacting with others, highlighting the use of skills for learning, creating empathy, managing strong emotions, and skills for problem-solving. Each month, we will focus on a theme.

This month, our school wide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners.

Second Step lessons teach skills for learning. You’ll be receiving Home Links describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child to practice them. We hope you enjoy them!

Please discuss with your child’s teacher if you’d like more suggestions about supporting skills for learning at home.

We will update parents on the month’s theme in our Bel Air E-News edition, and classroom teachers will provide specific information on Second Step skills students are focusing on in the classroom.

MVSEF’s Support During COVID

As the Mounds View School District takes important measures to plan for the upcoming school year, our alumni, parents, and community members have asked how they can help during this unsettled time. Accordingly, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation will partner with the school district to raise funds to cover expenses in these unprecedented circumstances.

Mounds View School District leadership has identified the need for unrestricted resources that will ensure reliable internet access for students and the necessary technology to support learning whether it be at home or in school. Additional expenses will also likely be incurred to safeguard our staff and students in the schools and contributions will be equitably directed accordingly.

The MVSEF’s commitment to the district spans over thirty years and at no time has our support been more vital given the multitude of challenges confronting our school community. If you are interested in making a donation to the MVSEF, please click here. Your contribution will provide the district much needed flexibility to respond to student’s needs.
