Temperament and Attachment

- Temperament quality, intensity of emotional reactions.

EX: passivity relates how actively involved child with surroundings.

- Irritability feel distressed- some infants cry easily.

Activity patterns- levels of movement also vary in infants.

Attachment- strong emotional connection that develops between people

EX: Separation anxiety- child protests when familiar face leaving

Changes Over Time

Birth to Three Months:

- no emotions

-distress shown by crying

Three to six Months:

-respond to people (smiling)

-happy sounds

-crying still shown for distress

-start using different cries

Six To Twelve Months:

-involved with caregivers

-develop fear

Twelve To Twenty- Four Months:

-separation anxiety

-clingy

-self- aware

-exploring
