Classroom Update

Mrs. Van Gelder's 5th Grade Class

Reading Time

We have changed things up this week and introduced stations. The kids and myself love how these are going. I know it's the first week, but I felt like our time was better used and we are getting "more bang for our buck." There are 8 stations around the room that the kids are systematically rotating through. They are working on all levels and areas of skills. Attached are a few pictures to show you the kids at work.

SPELLING!!! I want to remind you that there will be a new list of words coming home Monday. It is so important that your child practices those each night for a few minutes. Some kids found out that their final test was not good. Their grades will reflect these scores. Please encourage them to practice! Thanks!

Math Matters!

We worked on solving double digit multiplication problems in various ways. It is great to hear the kids begin the process of explaining their thinking. The kids will be responsible for showing how to solve problems in multiple ways.

I have also noticed that many of the students are not comfortable with their basic multiplication and division facts to 12. We will begin doing timed test to get these facts at a more efficient pace. We took our first test working on 2s. You will find their test in the red folder. Check it out so you know how they did.

Release Time

We had a farewell party for our two turtles. Kane and Hannah both brought one in and we walked them to the pond so they can begin their hibernation process. It was fun to see them begin to dig in. Thank you to their parents for allowing us to have and enjoy them.

Balloon Day Weekend

I hope you all enjoy your weekend. I know I am hoping to see some balloons this weekend and looking forward to the parade.

Good Luck tonight to the Panthers!!
