GRE Family Gazette
January 28, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
It was a short week packed with a lot of learning! Students at GRE continue to amaze me every day. This week I saw students deep in conversation about life choices to help them stay healthy, geometry shape identification, rocket launches across the STEM Hub, Reader's Response Letters and so much more! My favorite days are spent walking around the building and visiting classrooms. Our kids are amazing!
This week the weather will take a drastic dip. Please make sure that you are sending your child to school with hats, gloves, warm jackets and scarfs. You can help us by having conversations at home about the importance of wearing these items when they are outdoors. Our week will wrap up with our Monthly Party Wagon! This is always an exciting time where we award Leaders of the Month for each classroom along with some other classroom awards. The kids love it and so do I! I'll be sure to include some photos of this fun event in next week's newsletter. Stay tuned!
Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:
1. During cold and flu season especially, please be sure to follow our Elementary Handbook guidelines and remember your child needs to be free of vomiting, diarrhea and/or fever-free (less than 100.5) without medications for 24 hours before they can come or return to school. To review any other important information found in the handbook, click here.
2. As a reminder, February conferences are approaching and are by invitation only per teacher recommendation. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. Every family will get a letter home in backpacks this Friday, February 1st to indicate whether or not a conference is needed at this time.
3. Kindergarten enrollment will begin on February 19th thru March 15th. You can find all the information you need for this below.
4. Mrs. Keller is in need of some Engineering items. Click here to learn more about it and see if you can help out!
5. We are looking for members of our community that either live or work within the Big Walnut enrollment area, have a vested interest in the district, and have expertise in a financial field to be a part of this committee.
Finance Committee Goals
- To obtain advice and counsel that enhances the effectiveness of the decision-making process with respect to financial and business issues.
- To serve as an avenue to improve public awareness of the Big Walnut School District’s finance issues and to inform the District governing team of community perspectives related to finance.
- To enhance communication between all stakeholders.
The finance committee by-laws, application form, and contact information on the Treasurer’s page of the District website athttp://www.bwls.net/Treasurer.aspx, and interested individuals are requested to send a completed application form along with a letter stating interest to the District Treasurer, Jeremy Buskirk (jeremybuskirk@bwls.net).

We wrapped up our Basketball unit when we returned from winter break and we are currently in the middle of Jump Roping.
2nd, 3rd and 4th graders have worked on individual jump roping as well as partner twirl and jump. See if they are able to tell you the 4 stages of individual jump rope to get to the highest level. 3rd and 4th graders are learning how to jump into a moving rope while 2nd graders are learning how to jump starting in the rope to begin with.
1st graders and KG started the unit with learning different types of jumps. See if they can tell you the difference between a jumping jack and a star jump! They continued using a jump rope to make any shape of their choice on the floor. They jumped over it, around it and we pretended it was a puddle and jumped in it. They are currently learning how to jump over a jump rope starting in the middle while having partners twirl it.
This is a unit that requires a lot of energy and students get out of breath easily. Please remember to send them with a water bottle on PE days along with tennis shoes to decrease injuries. They are more than welcome to change from boots to tennis shoes when they come in the gym. Thanks for your support in making this a fun and safe learning opportunity!
