"Precepts"

We started the week by learning about what a precept is, "a rule that says how people should behave," or words to live by. We discussed different precepts and what they mean. Each month, I am going to post a precept in our classroom (and in our weekly smore newsletters). We will talk about them and refer to them throughout the month. At the end of the month, the kids will write a short essay (a few sentences) describing what the precept means to them, what they think it means, perhaps an example, etc. I am very excited for this meaningful activity! Please discuss these great words to live by with your children. Our first precept is posted above and fist perfectly with our classroom to try your best, "It is okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try."

Welcome Ms. Toivonen!

I am so excited to welcome Ms. Toivonen to our classroom! She will be student teaching here for the next 8 weeks. She has already jumped right in and been a huge help in our classroom. Here is a letter from Ms. Toivonen:

Dear Parents and Guardians of Mrs. Simac’s Second Grade class,

My name is Joan Toivonen and I am excited to be student teaching in your student’s classroom for the next eight weeks. I am completing the last semester of my elementary teacher certification program from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. The beautiful, recreational, and friendly area brought me to Eagle River from my home in the Upper Peninsula. I am looking forward to getting to know and working with your student during my student teaching! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs. Simac or myself at (715) 479-6471.

Sincerely,

Ms. Joan Toivonen

Superkids

We just started our new Superkids story. On Friday, we brainstormed ideas for our "personal stories". We will begin writing our first rough drafts on Monday. Please discuss this with your child at home and ask them what their personal stories will be about. Personal stories should:

-have really happened to you

-are strong memories

-use the word "I"

-have emotions attached to them (happy or sad)

-are important to you

Twitter!

Our class has created a Twitter account to connect and collaborate with kids all over the world! They picked our "handle" - @2ndsalamanders. We are figuring out how we are going to be using it. We would like to have a daily "Tweeter" tweeting about things they learned or found interesting. We would love it if you followed us!

Math - $$$

We have just started learning about money and we LOVE it! Please practice counting money at home with your child (we are learning about change right now) as often as possible. Even 5 minutes per night will make a difference and be very helpful in helping them learn. Thank you for your support!

Skype Mystery Number Game

On Tuesday, our class met some friends in Lewisville, Texas via Skype! We played the Mystery Number Game. We are excited to "meet" with them again and learn more together!
