2017-18 Cheyenne Middle School Newsletter - January
From Our Principal
Happy 2018 Cheyenne Families,
The new year brings new beginnings. After a long holiday break, I always look forward to seeing the staff and students. My own family is eager to return to school and to begin the new semester. We look forward to seeing your children Thursday morning, January 4th. The gym doors open at 7:15 am, and students report to the gym or the cafeteria for breakfast. Thursday is the first day of the second semester. It has been a long and relaxing break for all.
We will be providing schedules for students to help them maneuver to their new electives. 8th-grade students will get their schedules before school in the gym. 6th and 7th-grade students will receive their schedules in their first our classroom at 7:50 am. We are not able to make schedule adjustments as all of our elective courses are at capacity. Students are likely to have received their elected requests, but additional electives were filled according to class openings.
The first semester grading period ended on December 20. All student work was completed and turned in on December 20. If a student was absent and needs to make up any work or final assessment from the first semester they must get that completed ASAP. First-semester final grades will be posted by Friday, January 12th at 3 pm. Please check your portal for final grades. The district has gone paperless with final grades for several years now. If you are having struggles with parent portal, there is an attachment link here to assist you.
The second semester is always busy and full of student activities. We want students to continue their focus on academic and extracurricular excellence. We encourage students to set a firm foundation this first nine weeks for their semester grades. This is crucial for students to be able to grow academically throughout the semester. For students to achieve academically, there should be a specific place and time for them to complete homework at home. Students usually have math assignments each evening, along with additional studying or reading each night for other courses. Homework is a continuation of daily classwork and should be completed in a short amount of time.
The winter weather is very unpredictable this time of year. Oklahoma can have a 65-degree day and then turn around and have ice and snow the next. As the weather changes, students must dress appropriately and in layers for comfort in school. When the weather turns, wintery school closings will be on our district website, district Facebook page, and through local news stations. I would encourage you to add the school way app to your phone and sign-up for messages from the district and our school. This is just another way you can receive reminders and updates regarding district/school events.
We look forward to a great start of the second semester!

Counselor's Corner
Each year, Edmond Public Schools provides an opportunity for our students to be educated in signs of depression and suicide prevention. Teresa Knight, school psychologist, & Michele Kingdom, 7th grade counselor, will be presenting the research based program, called the SOS Suicide Prevention Program, to the 7th grade students on the week of January 22, 2018. The goals of the program are straightforward: to help students understand that depression is treatable, to understand and identify the signs of depression and suicide in a friend, and to help students understand the steps of how to get help: ACT (Act, Care, Tell). Students will view a factual video, will receive instruction, and will have a question/answer session. It is our hope that all students will participate in this program. If you have additional questions regarding the SOS program, please contact Teresa Knight or Michele Kingdom via email at Teresa.knight@edmondschools.net or Michele.kingdom@edmondschools.net

2017 State Test Results Went Home Before the Holiday
Last year we had new tests based on new, more rigorous standards. Anytime there are new standards, there is a new test and the State Department of Education is then required to set new cut scores for the tests. The new cut scores for this year is calibrated to create higher expectations for teaching and learning.
