Florence 1 Schools 2020 Writing Award Winners Announced
The Florence 1 Schools district writing program announces its winners for the school year 2019-2020. The Writing Awards Program seeks to integrate teaching and instructional objectives, content, and standards in English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies specific to each grade level.
The program was expanded this year to invite third through eighth grade students across the district to participate in the program. School level winners’ essays are chosen from class level winners as finalists for the district level selection.
A skilled panel of writing judges noted that this year’s essays were informative, thoroughly addressed the topics, referenced previous reading, and showed a strong sense of voice and wide-ranging perspectives.
Students wrote about topics ranging from their most favorite book series in the third grade, the need for perseverance at the fourth-grade level, the advantages and current relevance of specific New Deal programs in 5th grade, whether or not exotic animals could be legitimate household pets in the sixth grade, taking risks in unchartered territories in the 7th grade, and research on teens and maturity in the 8th grade.
These winners respectively from 3rd to 8th are Khloe McElveen (Lester); Lily O’Neal (Royall); Parker Owens (Briggs); Addisyn Suggs (Savannah Grove); London Hilton (Williams); and Marie Rooze (Sneed).
Each school and all class winners will be recognized by their schools at the end of the year. "We congratulate all of the winners at each grade level as well as all participants and the teachers who guided the students through this district-wide writing process," said Kim Kinley-Howard, Florence 1 Schools Language Arts Coordinator.
Khloe McElveen - Lester Elementary
On the best books read this year…
Lily O'Neal - Royall Elementary
On the theme of determination and perseverance in books read this year…
Melody was very determined to get through those challenges even with her special needs…In my opinion, the characters were very bold and courageous during challenges. How do you think you would have handled these difficult problems?
Parker Owens - Briggs Elementary
On Roosevelt's New Deal Program of the 1930s…
People had no hope until the New Deal was created. When Franklin Roosevelt was elected, he helped create many programs to help a struggling economy.
Addisyn Suggs - Savannah Grove Elementary
On exotic animal as pets…
The animals are not living in their natural habitat, and they won’t know how to live on their own once released back into the wild. Now listen, I do think that there is a positive side of owning an exotic animal. However, personally, I think you should let animal specialists take care of things like that.
London Hilton - Williams Middle
On taking risks…
I believe the risk is worth the cost because if something bad does happen and people die or get injured, we could fix that to prevent it from happening again. Ever since people started taking risks, this world has gotten smarter, and it continues to get smarter the more people take risks.
Marie Rooze - Sneed Middle
On getting the point about driving and maturity……
The brain is still in development through teen years. This means that teens tend to make more immature and impulsive decisions than adults do…So why risk younger teen lives as far as driving? The evidence shows that the minimum driving age should be raised to protect young teens.
