Ms. Hurley's Weekly Tidbits
Week of March 27
Our Learning This Week
Reading: Our story this week was called Farfallina and Marcel. In this story, students learned about two characters that became friends- a caterpillar and a duck. As they grew, changes happened to their bodies and they couldn't recognize each other. Students enjoyed seeing their friendship grow and when they realized who each other was at the end of the story! In phonics, we reviewed the ou spelling and learned ow. Students loved making a clOUd, flOWer and band aid (ouch) to practice reading and writing words with this sound. We also learned the blend shr and practiced reading and finding words that start with this sound. Our vocabulary words were splatter, reflection, and vanish. This week, we focused more on ed and the sounds it makes. We met Ed and Edie that are added to the end of a verb and since they are from the past, they are very old! Students learned that these two can only make three sounds- we practiced sounds with /id/ and /d/ and will learn /t/ next week. We ended the week learning about the life cycle of a butterfly! Our sight words for the week included under, story, saw, left, don't, few, while, and along.
Writing: In writing, we started working on our final draft of our class walk narrative. Students also worked on writing about their favorite part in the Pete the Cat play!
Math: In math this week, we worked on our understanding of fact families. Students did well with correlating the three numbers together and writing 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts with parts and a whole. We also worked on finding a missing part while developing a fact family. We ended the week with some skip counting practice. We worked on counting by 5s and 10s.
Listening & Learning: This week students enjoyed learning more about volcanoes and geysers. They enjoyed seeing pictures and videos showing how these erupt and how one erupts with magma and lava and the other with water and steam. We also enjoyed reading Pete the Cat books before our play. On Friday, we celebrated our last day with Ms. Smith! We have loved having her in our room and will miss her lots. She will still be in the school for the kiddos to see her. We are excited to have Mrs. Abernathy back on Monday!
News & Notes
Students filled our next starry celebration! We voted and the kiddos wanted a pajama and stuffed animal party. We will be celebrating on Monday. Please send your child in with pjs and a stuffed animal that can fit in their backpack.
Thank you to Mrs. Chevalier, Mrs. Coulter, Ms. Isaac, Mr. Meilunas and Mrs. Schotts for coming on our field trip! We had a terrific time and the kiddos loved going somewhere new.
We will celebrate Easter on Thursday, April 7. A flyer was sent home with additional information. Students can bring in small goodies to put in our bunny cups!
We are currently starting to work on a class book. Please be on the lookout for an order form coming home in the next few weeks. Families can order a book to purchase. Additional information to come!
