This Sunday’s parable is found in Luke 10:30-37. Read it this week and see if you can locate the Prompt, the Surprise, the Point, and the Application. One of my goals as your pastor is not just to teach you God’s Word, but to teach you HOW to study God’s Word on your own. Our journey through the parables provides a great opportunity for you to practice your study skills and then listen each Sunday to see how you did. In that way it’s similar to the practice SATs you took in high school - you get the chance to see how well you can do without any pressure!

While the first 3 elements - Prompt, Surprise, and Point should be similar from person to person, the Application can vary greatly. For instance from yesterday’s sermon, the Holy Spirit might have convicted one person that their faith is getting choked out by the concerns and distractions of the world; at the same time the Spirit might have convicted another person that the spiritual fruit of self-control is lacking in them; while the Spirit convicted a third person that they had not truly placed their faith in Christ. The Application of God’s Word will vary from person to person as the Holy Spirit applies it uniquely to your life. So don’t be surprised if the Application I draw from a parable is different than the one you found.
