Mindfulness Meditation
These days our minds are always racing. We are thinking about the things that need to be done, worries and we may struggle with feelings of being overwhelmed.
There has been research that shows meditation can reduce blood pressure, boost recovery after your body releases the stress hormone cortisol, strengthen the immune system, slow the age-related atrophy of the brain and lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Meditation has also been shown to increase productivity in the workplace and improve the behavior and grades of students.
This may be a great time to try something new. It is free and you can do it anywhere. The benefits of meditation can be huge.
To begin mindfulness meditation:
-Sit comfortably- it is best to have a reasonably straight spine. You can sit on the floor or on a chair. You can close your eyes or leave them open and focus on a neutral point.
-Bring your full attention to the feeling of your breaths going in and out. Focus on your chest, your belly or your nostrils. Just feel the physical sensation of your breathing. Some people mentally say “in” and “out” when they are breathing.
-Every time you catch your attention wandering (and you will) bring your attention back to your breathing. Don’t judge yourself if your attention wanders, just guide it back to the breathing.
Start slowly, just a few minutes a day. This is something you can do on your own or with your family. Give it a try!
