GRADE LEVEL UPDATES
Kindergarten: Hi Kindergarten Family, next week we will continue learning about Christmas. We will focus on asking and answering questions about Christmas stories. We will continue the math skills Addition and Subtraction. Please be reminded that next week is our Christmas Spirit Week! Thank you for all you do for our students at WPS. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
First Grade: Hello from First Grade! We will continue with our Christmas unit next week, focusing on Christmas Around the World. We’ll be reading various gingerbread books and comparing/contrasting. We’ll also be reviewing math skills with Christmas activities. Please be reminded that next week is our Christmas Spirit Week!
Second Grade: Greetings from Second Grade! Next week we will continue learning about how Christmas is celebrated all around the world. We will continue practicing strategies to solve two-step word problems with two-digit numbers. We will also review standards we have been coving so far this nine weeks using read alouds. Please continue to read each night for at least 20 minutes.
Exceptional Children: Mrs Knox and Mrs Beach’s classes will be attending the Special Olympics on Wednesday December 13th at South Creek Elementary School.
Resource:
Music: Students have done a wonderful job learning Christmas and seasonal songs! We will be singing some of them for the “All Sing” on Friday, December 15th. Many of our First and Second grade students will participate in the “All County Elementary Children’s Christmas Concert” December 14th at 6:30 p.m. at Riverside High School auditorium. In music class, students will play holiday music with instruments while reading rhythms this week!!
Library:
The “Maker Space” was open in the library this week. Students enjoyed building and creating with lots of different materials. Some centers include: Legos, marble slides, real-life Lincoln logs, and puppet show to name a few. This gives students a time to use their creativity and have fun at the same time, while learning to work together. If you have a kindergartener, please make sure you return their “test book” they got from the library. This is their first time borrowing a book, and practicing bringing them back. After Christmas, they will begin getting a book each week!
Remote Learning Days Information
All WPS students will receive work packets for December 18 and 19 to complete for the remote learning day. These will be review work packets for Reading and Math. The assigned work packets will be due on January 3, 2024 when students return to school.
Attendance Matters
Our goal is to have students at school 90% of the time. Here are a few reasons why:
- Poor attendance has a direct effect on students ability to read.
- Improved attendance has a direct correlation with improved academic performance.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
How we can help tackle attendance?
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Try to schedule medical appointments and trips when school isn't in session.
- We realize this is not always possible so, if possible,
- Schedule medical appointments either early or late in the day. This allows students to be at school most of the day.
- Ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning if not at school
On Friday 12/15/23 our Kindergarten through Second Grade students will participate in our annual Christmas "ALL" Sing. This will take place in the Media Center.

Guidelines for Keeping Sick Children Home
Each day many parents are faced with a decision: should they keep their sick child at home or send them off to school? Often the way a child looks and acts can make the decision an obvious one. Please consider these guidelines:
Colds: Please keep your child at home if he/she has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his/her ability to perform in school. (i.e. uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy). If your child experiences green nasal discharge that continues throughout the day, or a cough lasting longer than ten days, or is accompanied by fever or chills and is productive of discolored sputum, consult with your physician.
Conjunctivitis (pink-eye): Following a diagnosis of bacterial conjunctivitis, the child may return to school after the first dose of prescribed medication.
Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and /or vomiting 3 or more times during the school day should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom-free for 24 hours.
Fever: The child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100°. The child can return to school after he/she has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin).
Impetigo: The child with impetigo may return to school 24 hours after treatment has begun. A doctor’s note is required to return to school.
Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash should return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorized the child’s return to school.
Strep Throat: A child with strep throat may return to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has begun.
A sick child cannot learn effectively and is unable to participate in classes in a meaningful way. Keeping a sick child home prevents the spread of illness in the school community and allows the child an opportunity to rest and recover.
