WMS HAPPENINGS
Team 6-4 - the Sea Stars News
In ESL English, we have been working on developing new vocabulary and writing sentences. We will be creating questions about the text and finding evidence from the text to support their answers. In Math, we have reached the middle of module 1. We have learned about ratios and several strategies to solve ratios including tape diagrams, double number lines, tables, and graphs. We will be starting unit rates soon and finding the better buy. In Social Studies, we are finishing up reviewing historical thinking and map skills from quarter one. We are now beginning to analyze 'What is a civilization?" by creating our own civilizations within student led groups. Recently, we completed " A Diary of an Archaeologist," and "Passports Around the World," as class-set projects. Next, we are moving on to our student of Ancient Civilizations including Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. In English, we have just completed a unit on Characterization and are currently learning how to write a Response to Literature using text evidence to support their response. In Science, we have been working hard learning about the plant structures and reproduction. At the start of November, we will be studying of how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of plants or animals.

News from the WMS Hamlet Library
Our “Celebrate Teen Read Week” raffle was a huge success with 552 entries submitted. The students were very excited to receive their prizes. Our sixth graders are making great strides in locating and selecting books. Ask them about their experiences using the Follett Destiny Online Public Access Catalog. Our seventh graders are expanding their understanding of award winning books by selecting titles from the Coretta Scott King, Michael L. Printz and Rhode Island Teen Book Award winners and nominees. Our eighth graders are engaging in meaningful discussions about digital citizenship and how their “digital footprints” impact their lives both in school and outside of school.

News from the Library at Villa Nova
During Teen Read Week, students participated in two free raffles. To be eligible to enter the first raffle, students simply had to visit the library and fill out a ticket. Thirty students won prizes when their names were drawn. To enter the second raffle, students had to correctly match ten staff members with their favorite teen books. Fifteen students guessed correctly, and their names were entered into the second raffle. Two students won prizes when their names were drawn.
A big "Thank You" to the staff who agreed to be photographed reading their favorite teen books! These photos, although hiding the person’s face, provided students with helpful clues.
In October, sixth grade students practiced locating fiction and nonfiction materials and used the online library catalog to learn about a book’s reading level, lexile level, availability, and location in the library. Seventh grade students learned about the life and career of the popular author of the Goosebumps series, R. L. Stine. Eighth grade students learned about Edgar Allan Poe and his short, troubled life. Later in the month, eighth grade students were introduced to career planning online resources available through WaytogoRI, Kids.gov, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
