Design Thinking: Behavior Plan
May 26, 2016
GROUP FORMATION
At least one teacher from each grade level (hint- 1 group will not have a 5th grade teacher)
At least one essential areas teacher
At least one special education teacher
At least one teaching assistant
Look at the 5 topics and move to the area of the room of the topic that your group chooses. Each group must choose a different topic, so that every group has a different topic they will address.
Topics:
- Cafeteria
- Office Referrals
- Playground
- Hallways/Arrival/Dismissal
- Assemblies/Bathrooms
What do we do if we finish before everyone else?
Think about alternatives to having students miss recess to complete unfinished work or for other behavior infractions.
TASK #1
Now think about the adults- parents, teachers, administrators. Discuss their needs and think about how the needs of the adults relate to the needs of the students.
Common Area Expectations
- Arrival/Dismissal
- Cafeteria
- Hallways
- Playground
- Bathrooms
- Assemblies
- What expectations should we have for students in these areas?
- What happens if students follow these expectations? How can we reinforce students/classes who follow expectations?
- What happens if they don't? What consequences would be appropriate for students/classes who do not follow expectations?
- How can we ensure accountability for all students, all the time?
- What do we do if/when student behavior does not meet expectations? Expectations are not consistently maintained by staff?
Office Referrals
- What behaviors should teachers manage in the classroom?
- When should a teacher call/email parents?
- What behaviors warrant an office referral?
- What actions should be taken by administrators once a student is referred?
- What should be communicated from administrator to teacher? How will this communication occur?
TASK #2
TASK #3
TASK #4
Create a prototype that addresses all aspects of the problem and provides more detailed information regarding the new recommended system and/or updates to the current system.
For common areas, include specific behavior expectations for students, along with details on what happens when students follow the expectations and what happens when they don't.
For office referrals, include behaviors that will be managed in the classroom, behaviors that warrant an office referral, administrator actions once student is in office, and method for communicating actions to teacher.
TASK #5
TASK #6
Prepare a presentation to the whole group that gives an overview of your updated prototype. The presentation can be verbal, digital, or chart/poster.
