Fun Learning Facts
It is my hope that the new Reading Log is better supporting the traits of a lifelong reader and inspiring a lifelong love of reading.
The final trait of a lifelong reader is they share their reading lives. Even though we often read by ourselves, lifelong readers love to share their reading lives. Although we don’t always read by ourselves, second graders LOVE to partner read (read a book together). We also LOVE hearing a good book read aloud either by myself, by our Weekly Mystery Reader, or by any other visitor to our classroom. We LOVED reading a script and performing a reader’s theatre play together. Several kids have started talking about books in a Book Club, while others participate in our G.O. T.O. (Give One, Take One) Book Recommendation board. We even share our thinking with authors—Winnebago hosted an author visit about a month ago, and we hope to be Skyping with several authors this spring. There is nothing more fun and contagious that sharing a love of reading. I hope you share your love of reading and storytelling with your kids because it matters.
REMEMBER TO SEND PICTURES OF YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER READING WILDLY to cgerwin@d15.us.
Happy Reading!!!

Curriculum Update
Literacy:
Reading - During reading this week, we finished up our first reading unit by learning how to retell a fictional story using a story map. We also talked about the big idea, or theme, in a story.
Writing – We are in between our writing units on narrative and informational texts, so we have been learning about several different types of poetry and creating acrostic poems.
Word Play - We are continuing to work in Spelling City and/or in small groups on various word play activities. We are also talking about ways we can incorporate fun words in our writing and use what we are learning to edit our spelling when we write.
Math - This week, we took the Unit 3 Pre-Assessment. We have also been practicing how to tell time by reading both analog and digital clocks in Number Corners. Unit 3 began with learning to add and subtract using an open number line strategy.
Science - This week, we began learning about what it means to be a scientist and the process of science inquiry called the Scientific Method. We are began exploring this process by trying to figure out how to keep a wagon from rolling.
