GHS Seniors Earn Associate's Degree

Big image
Gainesville High School has FOUR seniors who have already walked the stage at NCTC, obtaining their Associate's Degree prior to graduating from high school as part of the Collegiate Academy. Out of the 284 participating in graduation, Gabby Brasher and Jenny Liu were 2 out of only 11 students who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. Congratulations to Gabby, Jenny, Thalia Hernandez, and Jenny Liu on this tremendous accomplishment! The Collegiate Academy is a wonderful opportunity for our GHS students! If you want to learn more about how your student can be a part of this program, contact rstrait@gainesvilleisd.org.

The Gainesville High School graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, May 26 at the UNT Coliseum at 8pm.

Mrs. Searcy Earns Masonic Lodge Award

One of the Turning Point Mentors at Lee Intermediate noticed something special about one of the Lee teachers during his time visiting the campus and his student mentee. Reynolds Ansley, the mentor, visits his student during Mrs. Aimme Searcy's PE class. He was so impressed by her classroom managment and environment, that he felt she was deserving of an award. As a Mason, he searched for an award that was fitting for her and on Monday, May 15, she was presented with the award from the Masonic Lodge.

Potential Tuition-Based Pre-K at Edison

Gainesville ISD is currently surveying the community to assess the interest in a tuition-based Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2017-2018 school year. Students must be 4 years old by September 1, 2017 to be eligible. The tuition-based program would extend the current Pre-K program to include those who currently would not qualify for the free Pre-K according to the federal guidelines. These students would join our current Pre-K program at Edison Elementary. Gainesville Head Start is a separate federal program.

Anyone interested in the tuition-based Pre-K for the 2017-2018 school year will need to complete the survey, which can be found online at: https://tinyurl.com/kobglel

The survey will close on JUNE 2.

5th Grade Career Day

Lee 5th grade students particpated in the annual Career Day field trip. The students traveled to several local businesses throughout the morning. Thank you to our community partners for teaching our students about different professions during the informational tours: NTMC, Starnes Orthodontist, Game Warden, Airport, Commissioner's Court, Zodiac Seats , NCTC Health Sciences,, Refinery Red Veterinary Clinic, and Select Energy.

Also, thank you to our Lee counselor, Mrs. Donna Patterson, for working with businesses and organizing this event for our students every year!

NHS Project: Pride and Patriotism

The members of the Gainesville High School chapter of the National Honor Society have been even busier as they contributed to our chapter project: Pride and Patriotism.

As the project took off, students began researching GHS alumni that have joined any branch of the military, active or reserve, since graduation or have become a first responder. At the same time, students organized a donation drive to collect items to put in care packages. Once items were collected, students gathered to assemble, decorate and stuff care packages. Students did not simply put items in boxes - they wrote encouraging notes inside and out and decorated them to really make them festive.

Students then delivered these packages in teams to the different law enforcement and first responder locations in town. Students were able to tell these courageous men and women how grateful we are as a community for their service, and then the students were able to get to know a little more about the ins and outs of their daily routines.
