Pinehill School Newsletter
Wednesday 15th June 2022
Message from the Principal
Kia ora tatou,
This week is full of fabulous learning opportunities and experiences for our students outside of the classroom. This includes the Cluster Cross Country Event and the Mathex Inter school Competition. This is the first time in well over a year that cluster and inter school competitions have been able to take place and go ahead. Our students representing Pinehill School have put in so much mahi and practice leading up to this week. We wish our students all the very best at these events.
Matariki
Matariki is coming up. This year in New Zealand nationwide, Matariki will be acknowledged and celebrated as a public holiday on Friday 24th June. Matariki is the Maori New Year. It is an important time to celebrate the earth and show respect for the land. It is about coming together, sharing stories, acknowledging the past and those who have passed away, planning for the future, and feasting on the crops they have harvested.
What are we doing?
At Pinehill School, we are honouring the tradition of Matariki in classroom teaching sessions, as well as inviting everyone to a Matariki whole school morning tea.
How will we come together at Pinehill School?
As our Matariki morning tea was such a success last year, we will have a Pinehill School Matariki morning tea again this year. Next Monday 20th June we invite you all to join us from 10am -11am to celebrate Matariki. We will meet under the Taumaru - shade shelter, over the bottom court on the field. Everybody will need to bring warm layers of clothing to wear, as well as a plate of breakfast/morning tea food. This might be something like croissants, yoghurt, fruit etc. Everybody will be welcome to try different foods and join us for Matariki morning tea.
The Kapa Haka group will open our Matariki breakfast. A big thank you to Merimoana Kenrick for planning and organising our whole school Matariki morning tea.
As the weather grows colder, we are noticing students arriving at school with layers of clothing to keep warm. Please ensure our students are wearing the school uniform. I have attached the
school uniform policy for your quick reference. We have a large amount of school uniform items in the lost property box, including unnamed polar fleeces. Please check all your child’s uniform items are named to support us with returning any items that end up in lost property. Students will need their warm layers for the cooler weather that is predicted ahead for the next couple of weeks as well as for the Matariki morning tea.Teacher Only Day
Next week is a short week. The last day for the students next week will be Wednesday 22nd June. The school is closed on Thursday 23rd June. This is an accord Teacher Only Day. Throughout the Teacher Only Day, staff will be in professional learning both onsite and offsite for The Local Curriculum and The Writers Toolbox. A reminder that school is also closed on Friday 24th June for Matariki Public holiday.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

This week’s TRP sharing comes from Room 17. Their lesson was a combination of emotional literacy and empathy. They made emoji masks and created role plays based on scenarios where one group member was feeling a ‘red zone’ emotion, and the other group members came up with solutions using the other characters/emotions they had to show empathy to solve the problem.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Room 17.

Fun Food Friday This Friday, 19th June
It’s Fun Food Friday this week! Online orders close tonight, Wednesday 15th June. Don’t miss out! All orders are to be placed online using the Kindo Online Shop. Lunch will be delivered to your child’s classroom at lunchtime. For every order, we raise $1 for the school. Thank you for your support!
We will be selling snacks in the hall foyer at lunchtime between 12.40 pm and 1 pm. From the health point of view, we suggest 1-2 snacks and a $5 note is enough for your child. We encourage children only to buy snacks for their own consumption. Please let your child know that the parent helpers may turn them away if they spend more than $5 per purchase and/or buy for their friends.
